Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

so that he sat upon the ground in the ashes, and scraped off the filth of his sores with a potsherd.

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

But who will grant that God would speak, and open His lips against you,

“Only [O Lord,] do not do two things to me,
And then I will not hide myself from Your face:

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

Who will grant that You would hide me in the grave, that You would keep me secret, until Your wrath is past, that You would set me a fixed time and remember me?

“He will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;
And his grain will not bend down to the ground.

His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.

The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

Who doth grant now, That my words may be written? Who doth grant that in a book they may be graven?

who were snatched away {before their time}, whose foundation was washed away [by] a current?

As dry ground and heat snatch away the melted snow,
so Sheol steals those who have sinned.

God forbid, that I should grant your cause to be right! As for me, until mine end come will I never go from my innocence.

Iron is taken from the ground,
and copper is smelted from ore.

The darkness shall once come to an end: he can seek out the ground of all things; the stones, the dark, and the shadow of death.

He cuts a shaft far from human habitation,
in places unknown to those who walk above ground.
Suspended far away from people,
the miners swing back and forth.

"While the ground produces food, underneath it is torn up and burning hot,

They waited for me, as the earth doth for the rain; and gaped upon me, as the ground doth to receive the latter shower.

They are gaunt with want and famine; They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of wasteness and desolation.

{so that they dwell} [in] holes of [the] ground and [in the] rocks.

Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

"If I refused to grant the desire of the poor or exhausted the eyes of the widow,

"Who will grant me a hearing? Here's my signature let the Almighty answer! Since my adversary indicted me,

If, against me, my ground used to cry out, and, together, my ridges did weep;

If he deliver and grant pardon, who will judge or condemn? But if he hide away his countenance, who will turn it about again, whether it be to the people or to any man?

He will not keep alive one who is lawless, but, the right of oppressed ones, will he grant;

Camest thou ever into the ground of the sea: or hast thou walked in the low corners of the deep?

that it watereth and moistureth the dry and barren ground:

To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

He espieth the mountains, his pasture-ground, and, after every green thing, maketh search.

For she leaves her eggs on the ground
And warms them in the dust,

because God didn't grant her wisdom and never gave her understanding.

He paws the ground in the valley and rejoices in his strength; he goes out to face weapons.

He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.

"Beneath him he is armored as with sharp potsherds; he tears through muddy ground like a threshing sledge through grain.

"{On the ground it has no equal}-- a creature without fear.
