Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

The news about Him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, paralytics; and He healed them.

“And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.

Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?

When He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were demon-possessed met Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way.

And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters.

And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they implored Him to leave their region.

But when the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?”

And Jesus said to them, “The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus *said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They *said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”

But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout all that land.

As they were going out, a mute, demon-possessed man was brought to Him.

“But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.

It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household!

Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent.

Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples do what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath.”

And I would heal them.’

The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness,

and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away.

“Have you understood all these things?” They *said to Him, “Yes.”

He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?

And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”

And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.”

His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.

Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities.

When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”

But Jesus said to them, They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!”

They *said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”

When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear.

When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.

And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick;

and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.

Then the disciples *came and *said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”

And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.

So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, I feel compassion for the people, because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.”

And Jesus *said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets full.

And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread.

They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “He said that because we did not bring any bread.”

Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
