Jehovah said to Abram: Leave your country, your people, and your father's household, and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. So Abram left, just as Jehovah told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran. They set out for the land of Canaan and soon arrived there. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great (oak) tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Jehovah appeared to Abram and said: I will give this land to your offspring (seed). He built an altar there to Jehovah, who had appeared to him.

For you have not as yet come to the resting place and the inheritance that Jehovah your God is giving you. When you cross the Jordan and live in the land Jehovah your God gives you to inherit, and he gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security.
He said: I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance to you.

I will make the borders of your land extend from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Mediterranean Sea and from the desert to the Euphrates River. I will give you power over the inhabitants of the land. You will drive them out as you advance.

No land may be permanently bought or sold. It all belongs to me! It is not your land! You only live there for a little while.

Lot moved about with Abram. He also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together. Their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. Quarreling arose between Abram's herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot. So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.
