And having departed, he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the maiden. And the maiden gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a sepulcher.

And he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John was risen from the dead, and by some that Elijah appeared, and by others that a prophet, one of the ancient men arose. And Herod said, I beheaded John, but who is this about whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.
