if any man is inclin'd to do his will, he shall know whether the doctrine be from God, or whether I speak from my self. he that speaks from himself, has a view to his own glory: but he that has a view to his glory that sent him, deserves credit, and is a stranger to all imposture. was it not Moses who gave you the law, and yet none of you observe that law? for what do ye attempt to kill me? the people answered, saying, you are mad: who attempts to kill you? Jesus answered them, I perform'd one single miracle on the sabbath, and does that alarm you? Moses enjoin'd you circumcision (or rather not Moses, but the patriarchs) accordingly you circumcise a man on the sabbath-day. if to avoid the violation of the Mosaic law, a man be exposed to circumcision on the sabbath-day, are ye angry at me, because I cured a man, whose whole body was indisposed on the sabbath-day? judge not according to appearances, but judge according to equity. Then some that belong'd to Jerusalem, said, is not this he whom they seek to kill? yet there he is talking publickly without any opposition: are not the rulers convinc'd that he is the Messiah? however, we know from what quarter this man comes: but when Christ comes it will be unknown whence he came. Jesus then pursuing his discourse in the temple, rais'd his voice, and said, you know both who I am, and whence I am: however, I am not come of my self, but he that sent me is worthy of belief, him you are unacquainted with. but I know him, for I am from him, and he hath sent me. then they design'd to seize him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. besides many of the people believed on him, and said, when Christ comes, will he do more miracles than this man hath done? (the Pharisees being inform'd what the people rumour'd concerning him, they and the chief priests sent their officers to seize him.) then said Jesus, I shall be with you but for a little time, and then I shall go to him that sent me. ye shall seek me, but shall not find me: and where I shall go, thither ye cannot come. upon which the Jews said among themselves, whither will he go, that we cannot find him? will he go to the dispersed Jews among the Greeks, and instruct the Greeks? what does he mean by saying, "ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I go, thither ye cannot come?" In the last day, the most solemn day of the feast, Jesus being there, raised his voice, and said, if any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink. he that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water. (but this he meant of the spirit, which they that believed on him, should receive: for the spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.) many of the people therefore, who heard this discourse, said, this man is certainly a prophet. some said, this is the Messias. but said others, shall the Messias come out of Galilee? hath not the scripture said, that the Messiah is to rise out of the family of David, and out of Bethlehem, the village where David was born? so that the people were divided in their opinions about him. and some of them had a mind to seize him; but nobody laid hands on him. when the officers return'd to the chief priests and Pharisees, they asked them, why have ye not brought him? the officers answered, never did man speak like this man. upon which the Pharisees answered, are ye also seduced? have any of the rulers, or of the Pharisees believed on him? but the populace, who are ignorant of the law, are such wretches. thereupon Nicodemus, he that came to Jesus by night, and was then present, said to them, said to them, doth our law condemn any man before he is heard, without knowing the fact? they answered him, are you also of Galilee? search the scriptures, and you will not find that a prophet did ever arise out of Galilee. and every man went to his own house.


Now one of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, was there, a ruler of the Jews: who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him. Jesus answered him, I declare unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. read more.
Nicodemus replied, how can a man be born when he is old? can he enter into his mother, and be born a second time? Jesus answered, I tell thee, except a man be renewed by the spiritual baptism, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. the cleansing of the body is only external, but the purification of the spirit is spiritual. be not surprized that I said to thee, you must be born again. the wind bloweth where it listeth, and you hear the sound thereof, but cannot tell whence it comes, or whither it goes: such is the change in every one that is renewed by the spirit. Nicodemus answered, how can that be? Jesus answered him, are you a doctor in Israel, and not know these things?

Then the governour sign'd to Paul to reply; who said, I enter upon my defence with the greater confidence, by considering you have govern'd this nation several years: possibly you are appriz'd, that it is not above twelve days since, that I went to Jerusalem to worship. they neither found me in conference with any one in the temple, nor working up the people either in the assemblies or in the streets: read more.
so far are they from proving what they lay to my charge. I do indeed own, that I serve the God of our nation according to the discipline they call sect: and believe whatever is written in the law and in the prophets. I have the same expectations from the DEITY, which they themselves entertain, that of the resurrection both of the just and of the unjust. and 'tis my endeavour to preserve a conscience free from reproach both with respect to God, and with respect to men. after several years absence I came to Jerusalem, with contributions for my brethren, and oblations for the temple: there religiously employ'd some Asiatic Jews found me, without crowd or tumult: and here they ought to have appear'd, if they had any thing to object against me. or let these now declare, if they could convict me of any misdemeanor, when I was brought before the Sanhedrim: unless it be, that I did indeed break out into this expression, it "is for the resurrection of the dead, that I am now call'd into question."

When Jesus appear'd before the governor, the governor asked him, art thou the king of the Jews? and Jesus answer'd yes. but when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he return'd no answer. whereupon Pilate said to him, don't you hear how many things they lay to your charge? read more.
but he made no answer to any thing he said, so that the governor was very much surpriz'd.

then Pilate ask'd him, art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus answer'd him, 'tis as you say.

Pilate therefore ask'd him, art thou the king of the Jews? and he made answer, yes. the chief priests continuing to accuse him with much clamour, Pilate spake to him again, and said, will you make no defence for your self? don't you hear what they urge against you? read more.
but Jesus still made no answer; so that Pilate was much amaz'd.

Now when they heard this, their hearts were struck with remorse, and they said to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do? Peter replied, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy spirit. for the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. read more.
and with many other discourses did he conjure and exhort them, to save themselves from that depraved generation.

but Paul replied, they have publickly scourg'd us, who are Romans, without any trial, they have thrown us into jayl, and now do they give us a private discharge? no, let them come themselves and release us. the serjeants having reported what he said, to their officers, they began to be apprehensive upon hearing they were Romans. so they came, and by persuasions brought them out, and desired them to leave the city.

as they were tying him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion, does the law allow to scourge a Roman citizen, and without any trial? upon hearing that, the centurion went to acquaint the head officer, take care, said he, what you do; for this man is a Roman. then the head officer came to him, and said, tell me, are you a Roman? read more.
he answer'd, yes. the officer rejoin'd, my freedom cost me a considerable sum. but I had it, said Paul, by right of birth. immediately those who were going to put him to the question, withdrew: the commander himself being under some apprehension for having order'd him to be bound. as he was resolv'd to know for certain, the next day, what the Jews laid to his charge, he took off his chains, and summon'd the chief priests, and the council to appear, when Paul was brought, and presented before them.
