And LORD said to Moses, Number all the first-born males of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. And thou shall take the Levites for me (I am LORD) instead of all the first-born among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the sons of Israel. And the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks, and offer thou the one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering, to LORD, to make atonement for the Levites. And thou shall set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them for a wave-offering to LORD. Thus shall thou separate the Levites from among the sons of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine. And after that the Levites shall go in to do the service of the tent of meeting. And thou shall cleanse them, and offer them for a wave-offering. For they are wholly given to me from among the sons of Israel; instead of all who open the womb, even the first-born of all the sons of Israel, I have taken them to me.
