I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day. The night cometh, when no man can work.
"LORD, let me know mine end, and the number of my days: that I may be certified how long I have to live.
About that time Hezekiah was sick unto the death. And the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him, and said to him, "Thus sayeth the LORD: put thine household in an order, for thou shalt die and not live."
And why? As long as a man liveth, he is careless: for a quick dog, say they, is better than a dead lion.
If we live, we live to be at the Lord's will. And if we die, we die at the Lord's will.
For Christ is to me life, and death is to me advantage.
For here have we no continuing city: but we seek a one to come.
O spare me a little that I may recover my strength, before I go hence, and be no more seen."
O teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Whatsoever thou takest in hand to do, that do with all thy power: for among the dead, where thou goest unto, there is neither work, counsel, knowledge nor wisdom.
The light is sweet, and a pleasant thing is it for the eyes to look upon the Sun. If a man live many years, and be glad in them all, let him remember the days of darkness, which shall be many: And when they come, all things shall be but vanity.
For hell praiseth not thee, death doth not magnify thee. They that go down into the grave, praise not thy truth: but the living, yea the living acknowledge thee, like as I do this day. The father telleth his children of thy faithfulness.
Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning, and ye yourselves, like unto men that wait for their master when he will return from a wedding: that as soon as he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him. Happy are those servants, which their Lord, when he cometh, shall find waking; Verily I say unto you, he will gird himself about, and make them sit down to meat, and walk by them, and minister unto them.
For that, ye ought to say, "If the Lord will, and if we live, let us do this or that."
