But those wishing to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown the people in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all evils: which some seeking after have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
And the Pharisees, being avaricious, were hearing all these things, and murmuring against Him.
Why was not this myrrh sold for three hundred denaria, and given to the poor? And He spoke this, not because there was a care to him for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the purse, and was carrying those things cast in.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you purify the exterior of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of extortion and impurity.

But all fornication, and uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be named among you, as it becomes saints;
It is a faithful saying, If any one desires the episcopacy, he covets a beautiful work. Therefore it behooves the bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, modest, prudent, orderly, hospitable, competent to teach, not given to wine, not a controvertist; but gentle, peaceable, not a money lover;

Whence come wars and whence come battles within you? are they not from thence, from your pleasures warring in your members? You lust, and you have not: you murder, and you strive, and you are not able to obtain: you fight and you war; and have not, because you do not ask:
Therefore I considered it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they may come to you beforehand, and perfect your preannounced benefaction, that it may be ready, as a benefaction, not as a stingy contribution.
