For they bind up burdens that are heavy and hard to be borne, and lay them on the shoulders of men; but they refuse to move them with one of their fingers. And they do all their works for the purpose of being seen by men. They make their amulets broad, and enlarge the fringes of their mantles. They also love the most honorable places at suppers, and the first seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But you must not be called Rabbi; for one is your leader, and all of you are brethren. And call no man on earth your father; for one is your Father, who is in heaven. And be not called leaders; for one is your leader, the Christ. And the greatest among you shall be your minister. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. But alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you eat up the houses of widows, and for a pretext make long prayers. For this reason, you shall receive the greater condemnation. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you close the kingdom of heaven in the face of men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you suffer those who are entering, to go in. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, you make him twofold more a child of hell than yourselves. Alas for you, blind guides! who say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, becomes a debtor. Fools and blind! for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold? And, Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gift that is on it, becomes a debtor. Fools and blind! for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears by it, and by all that is on it. And whoever swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him that dwells in it. And he that swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him that sits upon it. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, its justice, its mercy, and its faithfulness. These you ought to have done, and those you ought not to have neglected. Blind guides! who strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you make clean the outside of the cup and the plate; but within they are full of rapine and excess. Blind Pharisee! first make clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may be clean. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitened sepulchers, which without appear beautiful, but within are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. So also you outwardly appear to men to be just, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the sepulchers of the righteous, and say: If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. So then you testify against yourselves, that you are the sons of those who killed the prophets. Do you also fill up the measure of your fathers. Alas for you, Pharisees! for you love the chief seat in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like graves that are not seen; and men that walk over them know it not. And one of the lawyers answered and said to him: Teacher, in saying these things, you reproach us also. He replied: Alas for you, lawyers, also! for you bind upon men burdens hard to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers, Alas for you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Therefore you attest and approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers. For this reason also the Wisdom of God said: I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and persecute, that the blood of all the prophets, which has been shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple; yes, I say to you, It shall be required of this generation. Thoughtless Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ has been plainly set forth crucified? This only I wish to learn of you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so thoughtless? After having begun in Spirit, do you make an end in flesh?read more.
Have you suffered so many things in vain? if, indeed, it be in vain. He that supplies to you the Spirit, and works mighty deeds among you, does he this by works of law or by the hearing of faith?

2 Corinthians 3:3-6

you are well known to be a letter of Christ, written by us as his ministers, not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. Now, confidence such as this we have, through the Christ, toward God; not that we are able, of ourselves, to devise any thing, as from ourselves; but our ability is from God,read more.
who has made us able ministers of the new covenant, not of letter, but. of spirit: for the letter kills, but the spirit makes alive.

John 4:19-24

The woman said to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where we ought to worship. Jesus said to her: Woman, believe me, the hour is coming, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, will you worship the Father.read more.
You worship you know not what; we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is spirit; and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Romans 7:4-6

So then, my brethren, you, also, have died to the law, by the body of the Christ, in order that you may be married to another, to him who was raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were excited by the law, were active in our members, so as to bring forth fruit to death: but now we are made free from the law, being dead to that by which we were bound, so that we may serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Romans 8:1-11

There is now, therefore, no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed me from the law of sin, and of death. For what the law could not do, because it was weak through the flesh, God has done, who, sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for a sin-offering, condemned sin in the flesh, read more.
that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For those who are according to the flesh, mind the things of the flesh; but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace. Because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can it be. Those, then, who are in the flesh, can not please God. But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now, if any one has not the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. But if Christ is in you, the body is dead, on account of sin, but the Spirit is life, on ac count of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised the Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies, because of his Spirit that dwells in you.

1 Corinthians 15:45-46

So, also, it is written: The first man Adam became a living soul, the last Adam a life-giving spirit. But that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is animal; and afterward that which is spiritual.

2 Corinthians 3:13-18

and do not as Moses did, who put a vail over his face, so that the sons of Israel could not steadily look to the end of that which was to come to an end. But their minds were blinded: for till this day, in the reading of the old covenant, the same vail remains not taken away, which vail is removed in Christ. But to this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart:read more.
but whenever their heart shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. And we all, with unvailed face, reflecting the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Lord the Spirit.

Hebrews 7:18-22

For, indeed, there is a setting aside of the preceding commandment, because it was weak and unprofitable, (for the law made no perfect expiation), and the introduction of a better hope, by which we draw near to God. And inasmuch as he was made a priest, not without an oath, read more.
(for those priests were made such without an oath, but this one with an oath, by him that said to him, The Lord swore, and will not repent, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchisedec;) in so much has Jesus become the surety of a better covenant.

Hebrews 8:1-13

Now concerning the things that have been spoken, the principal point is this: We have such a high priest, who has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the holy places, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore, it is necessary that this one also have something which he may offer.read more.
For if he were on earth, he could not be a priest; because there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: and these serve the copy and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: See now, says he, that you make all things according to the pattern shown you in the mount. But now he has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as he is the mediator of a better covenant, which is established with reference to better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, no place would have been sought for a second. For, finding fault with them, he says: Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will ratify a new covenant for the house of Israel, and for the house of Judah: not like the covenant which I made with their fathers, in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: because they continued not in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, says the Lord; putting my laws into their understanding, I will also write them upon their hearts; and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people; and they shall not teach, every one his citizen, and every one his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest; because I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities I will remember no more. In saying, A new covenant, he has regarded the first as out of use. Now, that which is out of use, and has become old, is ready to disappear.
