And there were gathered unto Him the pharisees, and some of the scribes, from Jerusalem; and when they saw some of his disciples eating with impure (that is, unwashed) hands, they found fault: for the pharisees, and indeed all the Jews, do not eat till they have washed their hands thoroughly, observing the tradition of the ancients.read more.
And when they come from the market, they do not eat till they have washed. And there are many other things, which they have received to observe, as the washing of cups, and pots, and brass-vessels, and seats. Then the pharisees and the scribes ask Him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but eat without washing their hands? But He answered them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me: and in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the injunctions of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye retain the tradition of men, as the washings of pots and cups, and many other such like things.

Then came to Jesus the scribes and pharisees from Jerusalem saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat.

And as He was sitting at table in the house of Matthew, behold, several publicans and notorious sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why doth your master eat with publicans and sinners? But Jesus hearing them, said unto them, They that are in health need not a physician, but they that are ill: go therefore and learn what that means,read more.

And ye expressly annul the commandment of God, that ye may retain your own tradition; for Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If a man tell his father or mother, That which thou mightest be profited by from me is Corban, (that is, a gift to the temple) it sufficeth:read more.
and so ye allow him to do nothing more for his father or his mother: making void the word of God by your tradition,. And many such like things ye do.

But He answered and said unto them, And why do ye transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God commanded saying, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If any man say to his father or mother, "that which thou mightest be profited by from me is a gift to the temple,"read more.
and so honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. And thus have ye made void the commandment of God by your tradition.

Then spake Jesus to the people and to his disciples, saying, The scribes and pharisees sit in the seat of Moses: observe therefore and do all things whatsoever they tell you to observe; but do not ye according to their works, for they say and do not:read more.

Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe even your mint, and anise, and cummin, but neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and fidelity: these ye ought undoubtedly to practise, and not to omit the others. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel! Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of rapine and intemperance: thou blind pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside of them may be also clean. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who are like whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful without, but within are full of the bones of the dead, and all manner of filthiness; so do ye likewise outwardly appear to men to be righteous, but within are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the just, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been concerned with them in shedding the blood of the prophets: so that ye are witnesses yourselves, that ye are the children of those who killed the prophets: fill up then the measure of your fathers, ye serpents, ye brood of vipers: how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

And as He spake, a certain pharisee asked Him to dine with him: and He went in and sat down at table. And when the pharisee saw it he wondered that He did not wash first, before dinner. But the Lord said unto him, ye pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of rapine and wickedness.read more.
Senseless creatures! Did not He who made the outside, make also that which is within? give alms rather according to your ability: and behold all things are clean to you. But wo unto you pharisees, who tithe even your mint, and rue, and all your herbs, and pass by judgement and the love of God: these ought ye to practise and not to omit the others. Thus ye testify that ye approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they put them to death, and ye build their sepulchres. And therefore the wisdom of God hath said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute: that the blood of all the prophets which has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. Wo unto you interpreters of the law; for ye have taken away the key of knowledge, ye entered not in yourselves, and those that were entering in, ye hindered.

And He spake also this parable to some that trusted in themselves as being righteous, and despised others. Two men went up to the temple to pray; the one a pharisee and the other a publican. The pharisee standing by himself prayed thus, O God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, rapacious, unjust, adulterous, or even as this publican.read more.
I fast twice a week, and I give tithes of all that I possess. But the publican standing at a distance did not presume so much as to lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, O God, be merciful to me a sinner. I must perform the works of Him that sent me, while it is day: the night is coming, when no man can work. But as long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. He went therefore and washed, and came again seeing. And the neighbors, and they that had seen him before, that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat begging? And he said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. Then said some of the pharisees, This man is not of God, because He doth not keep the sabbath: but others said, How can a wicked man do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

Behold thou art called a Jew, and restest on the law, and boastest in God, and knowest his will, and approvest things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, and art persuaded that thou art a guide of the blind,read more.
a light to them that are in the darkness, an instructor of the simple, a teacher of babes, having the form of the knowledge and of the truth which is in the law. Thou then, who teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou, that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? But when the young man heard that, he went away sorrowful; for he had large possessions. Then said Jesus to his disciples, Verily I tell you, that a rich man shall with difficulty enter into the kingdom of heaven: and again I tell you, It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. His disciples, when they heard this, were exceedingly struck, and said, Who then can be saved? But Jesus looking upon them said unto them, With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Then Peter replied and said unto Him, Behold we have quitted all and have followed thee; what then shall we have? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I tell you, that ye who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon the twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel: yea and every one who hath left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, shall receive an hundred-fold, and shall inherit eternal life. But many that are first shall be last, and the last first.

And as he went out into the way, there came one running and kneeling to Him, and asked Him, Good master, what shall I do, that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why dost thou call me good? there is none good, but one, that is God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour thy father and thy mother.read more.

About this time as Jesus passed through the cornfields on the sabbath-day, his disciples being hungry began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat them. And when the pharisees saw it they said to Him, See, thy disciples are doing what is not lawful for them to do on the sabbath. But He replied, Have ye not read what David did, when he, and his attendants, were hungry? how he went into the house of God,read more.
and did eat the shew-bread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor those that were with him; but for the priests only? or have ye not read in the law, what profane sort of work the priests do in the temple on the sabbath-days, and yet are blameless? But I tell you, that a greater than the temple is here: and if ye had known what that scripture means, "I desire mercy rather than sacrifice," ye would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath. And he went away and came into their synagogue: and there being a man there who had a withered hand, they asked Him, if it were lawful to heal on the sabbath-days? that they might accuse Him. But He said unto them, What man of you shall have one of his sheep fall into a pit on the sabbath-day, and will not lay hold of it and lift it out? And of how much more worth is a man than a sheep? Sure then it is lawful to do good on the sabbath-days. Then saith He to the man, Stretch out thine hand: and he stretched it out, and it was made sound like the other. But the pharisees went out of the synagogue and took counsel together against Him, how they might destroy Him:

And it came to pass on the second-sabbath after the first, that as He was passing through the corn-fields, his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and rubbed them in their hands and ate them. And some of the pharisees said to them, Why do ye do that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath-days? And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read what David did, when he himself was hungry and those that were with him? how he went into the house of God,read more.
and did take and eat the shew-bread, and gave also to his attendants, which it is not lawful for any to eat but the priests. And He said unto them, the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath. And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that He went into a synagogue and taught; and there was a man there, whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and pharisees watched Him to see if He would work a cure on the sabbath: that they might find an accusation against Him. But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man that had the withered hand, Rise, and stand in the midst: and he rose up and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to let it be lost? And looking round upon them all, He said to the man, Stretch out thine hand: and he did so, and his hand was made as sound as the other. And they were filled with confusion: and consulted together, what they might do to Jesus.

And they went into Capernaum: and going directly into the synagogue on the sabbath, He taught the people: and they were astonished at his doctrine; for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an impure spirit,read more.

And He came down to Capernaum a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath-days, and they were astonished at his doctrine; for He spake with authority. And there was a man in the synagogue possessed by the spirit of an impure demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,read more.
saying, Let us alone, what hast thou to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art, the holy one of God: but Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him. And the demon threw him down in the midst of the assembly, and came out of him, having done him no hurt. And they were all amazed, and said one to another, What a speech is this? for with authority and power He commandeth the impure spirits, and they come out! And his fame spread all over the country round about.

And when He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath-day, there was a woman that had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and utterly unable to lift herself upright. And when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him, and said to her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.read more.
And He laid his hands upon her; and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue, being provoked that Jesus had wrought a cure on the sabbath-day, said to the people, There are six days in which ye ought to work; on these therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath-day. The Lord therefore answered him and said, Thou hypocrite, does not any of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall and lead him away to watering? And might not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day? Upon his saying this, all his adversaries were ashamed: but the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.

And as He went into the house of one of the chief of the pharisees to eat on the sabbath-day, and they were watching Him, behold, there was a certain man before Him that had a dropsy. And Jesus spake to the expounders of the law and to the pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-day?read more.
but they made no answer. And He took him and healed him, and sent him away: and said unto them, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out even on the sabbath-day? and they were not able to answer Him again to these things.

After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem near the sheep-market a pool, called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticos about it. In these lay a great number of people that were infirm, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.read more.
For an angel descended at a certain season into the pool, and moved the water; the first therefore that went in after the disturbing of the water, was cured of whatever malady he laboured under. The infirm man answered Him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is moved, to put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another goes down before me. Now this was the sabbath-day, therefore the Jews said to him that was cured, It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He, that made me well, said unto me, Take up thy bed and walk. Therefore they asked him, Who is the man that said to thee, Take up thy bed and walk? but he, that was healed, did not know who it was: for Jesus had withdrawn himself, there being many people in the place. Afterwards Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art healed; sin no more, least something worse befal thee. And the man went away, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had healed him. And for this did the Jews persecute Jesus, and endeavoured to put Him to death; because He had done these things on the sabbath-day.

Jesus answered and said unto them, I performed one miracle on the sabbath, and ye are all amazed at it. Now Moses gave you the law of circumcision, (not that it is originally from Moses, but from the patriarchs,) and ye circumcise even on the sabbath: if then a man receive circumcision on the sabbath-day, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are ye angry with me, because I made a man perfectly well on the sabbath-day?read more.

and returned early in the morning into the temple, and all the people came to Him: and He sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and pharisees brought to Him a woman taken in adultery; and setting her in the midst, they said to Him, "This woman was caught in the very act, committing adultery.read more.
Now Moses in the law has commanded us that such women should be stoned, but what sayest Thou?" This they said to tempt Him, that they might have something to accuse Him of. But Jesus stooping down, wrote with his finger upon the ground. And as they continued asking Him, He raised himself up and said unto them, "Let him that is without sin among you, first cast a stone at her." Then He stooped down again and wrote on the ground. But when they heard his answer, being convicted by their own conscience, they went out one by one, beginning at the elder, even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst of the people. Then Jesus rising up, and seeing none but the woman, said unto her, Where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? And she said, None, Lord. Then said Jesus unto her, Neither do I condemn thee, Go thy way and sin no more.

But when the pharisees heard that He had silenced the sadducees, they gathered together again, and one of them, an interpreter of the law, propounded a question, to try Him, and said, Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?read more.
And Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind: this is the first and great command. And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two precepts depend all the law and the prophets.

And one of the scribes, who heard them disputing, seeing that He answered them well, came to Him and asked Him, Which is the chief commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:" this is the first or chief commandment,read more.
and the second is like it, even this, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:" there is no other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto Him, Truly, Master, thou hast spoke exceeding well; for there is one God, and there is no other beside Him. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole-burnt-offerings and sacrifices. And Jesus seeing that he answered discreetly, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared any more to put questions to Him.

So when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon his glorious throne: and all nations shall be assembled before Him; and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides the sheep from the goats: and He shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left.read more.

Then will He say also to those on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was famishing, and ye gave me nothing to eat; I was a-thirst, and ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye took no care of me. God is a spirit, and they that worship Him, must worship in spirit and truth.

and do not as Moses, who put a veil upon his face, intimating that the children of Israel could not look to the end of that which was to be abolished; but their minds were blinded: for unto this day the same veil remaineth unremoved in the reading of the old testament, which veil is taken away in Christ. Though when it turneth unto the Lord, the veil is taken off: now the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

And they shall not teach every one his neighbour, and every one his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the lest even to the greatest of them. For I will forgive their crimes, and their sins and their iniquities I will remember no more." Now by saying, a new covenant, He hath antiquated the first: and what is antiquated, and groweth old, is near it's exit.
