save that the Holy Spirit witnesseth to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.
not given to wine, not a striker, but forbearing, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money;
tend the flock of God which is among you, overseeing it, not by constraint, but willingly; not for base gain, but with ready mind;
For a bishop must be without reproach, as Gods steward; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, not a striker, not greedy of base gain,
but have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor adulterating the word of God, but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every mans conscience in the sight of God.
For do I now seek the favor of men, or of God? Or am I endeavoring to please men? If I were still pleasing men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
but as we have been regarded by God as worthy to be intrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who trieth our hearts.
being troubled on every side, yet not distressed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and possessing all things.
And he said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead; but go thou and carry the tidings of the kingdom of God.
No one serving as a soldier entangleth himself with the affairs of life, that he may please him who chose him to be a soldier.
