But Jesus, aware of this, said, “You men of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves that you have no bread? Do you still not understand or remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you picked up? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many large baskets you picked up? read more.
How is it that you fail to understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him [what He meant].

They did not realize [or have the spiritual insight to understand] that He was speaking to them about the Father.

However, Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was referring to natural sleep.

Now those who were with me saw the light, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me.

Otherwise if you bless [and give thanks to God] in the spirit only, how will any outsider or someone who is not gifted [in spiritual matters] say the “Amen” [of agreement] to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?

Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what He was talking about.

But they did not understand what He had said to them.

Why do you misunderstand what I am saying? It is because [your spiritual ears are deaf and] you are unable to hear [the truth of] My word.
