Jesus answered them, I declare unto you, whosoever committeth sin, is a slave to sin.

by no means. know ye not, that to whom ye subject your selves vassals at command, his vassals you are whom you thus obey; the vassals either of sin to destruction, or of obedience to justification?

discountenance such as hold vain irreligious discourse; for they will grow bold in impiety,

the sting of death was sin; and the strength of sin was the law.

for as by Adam all die, even so by Christ shall all be restored to life.

and the genuine offspring of sin is death.

When you were in that destructive state of transgression and sin,

then it was I once liv'd secure; but when the prohibition came, sin exerted it self, and I was in a dying condition:

and if Christ be in you, tho' the body is mortal in consequence of sin; the spirit gives life by justification.

Even you, who were in a dying sinful state, and were uncircumcised Gentiles, has God raised to life, as he did Christ, having pardoned all your sins:

but what proceeds out of the mouth, is deriv'd from the heart, and that defiles the man. out of the heart proceed evil designs, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimony, slanders. these are the things which defile a man: but to eat without washing one's hands, that does not defile a man.

As they did not seek the favour of God, by worshipping him, God gave them over to a depraved sense, to act unworthy of human nature; they were full of all injustice, fornication, mischief, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, contention, fraud, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, enemies of God, injurious, proud, vain, inventers of vices, disobedient to parents, void of judgment, fidelity, and natural affection; implacable, and unmerciful: who knowing the divine rule of right, did not perceive that they who commit such things are worthy of death, and not only they who do the same, but they who give countenance to those that do them.

who were not, by their own choice, expos'd to this uncertain state, but by virtue of him, who subjected them thereto: and therefore hope to be removed from this slavish condition of mortality to the free inheritance of divine glory. for we know that the whole creation groans, and labours with general pain even to this day.
