Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

The tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools pours out foolishness.

The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall escape from trouble. A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompense of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.

As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: but he that opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for blows. A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

Whosoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

A hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

How long will you torment my soul, and break me in pieces with words?

He has put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him: he has broken his covenant. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is of little worth. The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for lack of wisdom.

The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increases learning.

As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he awakens morning by morning, he awakens my ear to hear as the learned.

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

A man has joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

Hold your peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD has prepared a sacrifice, he has bidden his guests.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger:

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judges righteously:

But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you be the Christ, the Son of God.

But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

And he answered him never a word; so that the governor marveled greatly.

But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marveled.

Then he questioned him with many words; but he answered him nothing.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; And went again into the judgment hall, and said unto Jesus, From where are you? But Jesus gave him no answer.

O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.read more.

And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: There is nothing from outside a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. And he said unto them, Are you so without understanding also? Do you not perceive, that whatsoever thing from outside enters into the man, it cannot defile him; Because it enters not into his heart, but into the belly, and goes out into the drain, purging all foods? And he said, That which came out of the man, that defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

If any man among you seems to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
