You are like a raging flood. But you will not be the most important, for you slept with my concubine. You dishonored your father's bed. Simeon and Levi are brothers. They use their weapons to commit violence. I will not join in their secret talks. I will not take part in their meetings. They killed people in anger. They crippled bulls for sport. A curse is on their anger, because it is so fierce. And a curse is on their fury, because it is so cruel. I will scatter them throughout the land of Israel. I will disperse them among its people. Judah, your brothers will praise you. You hold your enemies by the neck. Your brothers will bow down before you. Judah is like a lion, killing his victim and returning to his den. He is like a lion stretching out and lying down. No one dares disturb him. The royal scepter shall not depart from Judah. His descendants will always rule. Nations will bring him tribute and bow in obedience before him. This, until Shiloh comes and all will obey him. He will tie his donkey to a grapevine, his colt to the best vine. Dan will judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan will be a snake on a road, a viper on a path that bites a horse's heels so that its rider falls backwards. I wait with hope for your salvation, O Jehovah. Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders. He will strike back at their heels. Asher's food will be rich. He will provide delicacies fit for a king. Naphtali is a deer set free with beautiful fawns (words). Joseph is a fruitful tree, a fruitful tree by a spring, with branches climbing over a wall. Archers provoked him, shot at him, and harassed him. His bow stayed steady! His arms remained limber because of the help of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, because of the God of your father who helps you, because of the Almighty who blesses you from the heavens above, blessings from the deep springs below the ground, blessings from breasts and womb. The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the oldest mountains and the riches of the ancient hills. May these blessings rest on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the prince among his brothers. Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning and evening he destroys his enemies. Moses commanded us with a law (these teachings), a heritage of the assembly of Jacob. He was king in Jeshurun (Israel) when the leaders and all the tribes of the people of Israel were gathered. Do not let his men be few. Hear, O Jehovah, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people. With his hands he contended for them. May you (Jehovah) be help against his adversaries. Let Your Thummim and Your Urim belong to your godly man, whom you tested at Massah and with whom you contended at the waters of Meribah. Who said of his father and mother: 'I have not seen them; and he did not acknowledge his brothers, nor did he regard his own sons. They observed your word and kept your covenant.' They will teach your ordinances to Jacob, and your Law to Israel. They will burn incense before you, and whole burnt offerings on your altar. O Jehovah, bless his skills and accept the work of his hands. Shatter the loins of those who rise up against him and those who hate him, so that they will not rise again. May the beloved of Jehovah dwell in security by him who shields him all the day. He dwells between his shoulders. Blessed of Jehovah is his land. Bless it with the dew from heaven above and with the deep waters lying below. Bless with the choice yield of the sun, and with the bounty produced each month. Bless with the best things of the ancient mountains, and with the choice things of the everlasting hills. Bless with the choice things of the earth and its fullness. Let the favor of him who dwelt in the bush come to the head of Joseph and to the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers. As the firstborn of his bulls, majesty is his. His horns are the horns of the wild bull. With them he will push the peoples, all at once, to the ends of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim and the thousands of Manasseh. Rejoice Zebulun in your going out. And rejoice Issachar in your tents. They will call peoples to the mountain. There they will offer righteous sacrifices. They will draw out the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand. Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad. He lies down as a lion and tears the arm, also the crown of the head. He provided the first part for himself. There the ruler's portion was reserved. He came with the leaders of the people and executed his ordinance of Israel and the justice of Jehovah. Dan is a lion's cub. He leaps forth from Bashan. O Naphtali, satisfied with favor, and full of the blessing of Jehovah, take possession of the sea and the south. Asher is the most blessed with sons. May his brothers favor him. And may he dip his foot in oil. Your locks will be iron and bronze. According to your days, so will your leisurely walk be. There is none like the God of Jeshurun (Israel). He rides the heavens to give you help. He goes through the skies in his majesty. The eternal God is a dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms. He drove out the enemy from before you, and said: 'Destroy!' Israel dwells in security. The fountain of Jacob is secluded in a land of grain and new wine. His heavens also drop down dew. You are blessed O Israel. Who is like you, a people saved by Jehovah? He is the shield of your help and the sword of your majesty! So your enemies will cringe before you and you will tread upon their high places.

In these days Peter stood up among the brothers (about a hundred and twenty), and said: Brothers, the Scripture needed to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. (Matthew 27:5 says he hanged himself. The rope broke or the branch on which it was tied broke. Then he fell to the ground and burst open.) It became known to all who live in Jerusalem that the field was called the field of blood, in their language; Akeldama. One who was with us from the baptism of John, to the day that he was received up from us must become a witness with us of his resurrection. They proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. They prayed: You O Jehovah, know the hearts of all men. Show us which of these men you choose. It will be forty-three thousand seven hundred and fifty feet wide, and it will be as long as one of the sections of the tribes. It will extend from the eastern border to the western border, and the holy place will be in the middle of it. This special land that you set aside for Jehovah will be forty-three thousand seven hundred and fifty feet long and seventeen thousand five hundred feet wide. The whole area will be forty-three thousand seven hundred and fifty feet square. You must give this land as a special gift to Jehovah along with the city property. Whatever is left on the east side and west side of the holy area and the city property will belong to the prince. This land will extend eastward from the holy area to the eastern border, and it will extend westward to the western border. Both of these areas are as long as one of the sections of the tribes. These areas belong to the prince, and the holy area with the Holy Place of the Temple will be between them. The Levites' property and the city's property will be between the prince's part of the land. What is between Judah's and Benjamin's boundaries will belong to the prince. We will pass by and go a little farther and spend the night at Gibeah or Ramah. They passed by Jebus and continued on their way. It was sunset when they came to Gibeah in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. They turned off the road to spend the night there. They went into town and sat down in the city square. However no one offered to take them home for the night. An old man came by at the end of a day's work on the farm. He was originally from the mountains of Ephraim, but he was now living in Gibeah. (The other people there were from the tribe of Benjamin.) The old man saw the traveler in the city square and asked: Where do you come from? Where are you going? The Levite answered: We have been in Bethlehem in Judah. We are on our way home deep in the mountains of Ephraim. No one will put us up for the night. We have fodder and straw for our donkeys and we have bread and wine for my concubine and me and for my servant. We have everything we need. The old man said: Come to my home. You are welcome! I will take care of you. You do not have to spend the night in the square. He took them home and fed their donkeys. They washed their feet and ate and drank.

There was no king in Israel in those days. The tribe of Dan was looking for territory to claim and settle in because they had not yet received any land of their own among the tribes of Israel. The people of Dan sent five qualified men out of all the families in the tribe from the towns of Zorah and Eshtaol with instructions to explore the land and spy on it. While they were at Micah's house, they recognized the accent of the young Levite, so they went up to him and asked: What are you doing here? Who brought you here?read more.
He answered: Micah and I have an arrangement. He pays me to serve as his priest. They said to him: Please ask God if our journey will be successful. The priest answered: Do not worry. Jehovah is taking care of you on this trip. So the five men left and traveled to the town of Laish. They saw how the people there lived in security like the Sidonians. They were a peaceful, quiet people, with no argument with anyone. They had all they needed. They lived far away from the Sidonians and had nothing to do with any other people. When the five men returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, the people asked them what they found. They said: Come and attack Laish. We saw the land, and it is very good. Do not stay here doing nothing. Enter and possess the land. When you go you will find a secure people who do not suspect a thing. It is a big country. God has given it to you and it has all you could want. Six hundred men from the tribe of Dan left Zorah and Eshtaol, ready for war. They went up and camped west of Kiriath Jearim in Judah. That is why the place is still called Camp of Dan. They went from there to Micah's house in the mountains of Ephraim. The five men who had gone to spy on the country around Laish said to their companions: Did you know that here in one of these houses there is a wooden idol covered with silver? There are also other idols and an ephod. Consider what you should do. They went into Micah's house, where the young Levite lived. They greeted the Levite. The six hundred soldiers from the tribe of Dan, ready for battle, stood at the gate. The five spies went straight into the house. They took the wooden idol covered with silver, the other idols, and the ephod. The priest stayed at the gate with the six hundred armed men. The men went into Micah's house and took the sacred objects. The priest asked them: What are you doing? They told him: Be quiet. Do not say a word. Come with us and be our priest and adviser. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or to be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel? This filled the priest with joy. He took the sacred objects and went along with them. They turned around and started off, with their children, their livestock, and their belongings going ahead. They traveled a good way from the house when Micah gathered his neighbors for battle. They caught up with the Danites. They shouted at them. The Danites turned around and asked Micah, What is the problem? Why have you gathered such a company? Micah answered: What do you mean? You take my priest and the gods that I made, and walk off! What do I have left? The Danites responded: Do not say anymore or these men will get angry and attack you. You and your whole family would die. The Danites went on their way. Micah saw that they were too strong for him, so he went back home. They took the things Micah made and the priest who belonged to him and attacked Laish. Laish was a town of peaceful, quiet people in the same valley as Bethrehob. They killed the inhabitants and burned the town. There was no one to save them, because Laish was a long way from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any other people. The Danites rebuilt the town and settled down there. They changed its name from Laish to Dan, after their ancestor Dan, the son of Jacob. The Danites set up the idol to be worshiped, and Jonathan, the son of Gershom and grandson of Moses, served as a priest for the Danites. His descendants served as their priests until the people were taken away into exile. Micah's idol remained there as long as the Tent where God was worshiped was at Shiloh.

Any children you have later will be considered yours. Their inheritance will come from Ephraim and Manasseh. Your mother Rachel died in Canaan after we left northern Syria and before we reached Bethlehem. I had to bury her along the way. Then Israel saw Joseph's sons. He asked Joseph: Who are these boys? Joseph answered: They are my sons. God has given them to me here in Egypt. Bring them to me, Jacob said. I want to give them my blessing. Joseph brought the boys to him. Israel's eyesight was failing because of old age. He could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to his father. Israel hugged them and kissed them. Israel said to Joseph: I never expected to see you again. Now God has even let me see your sons. Joseph took them off his father's lap and bowed with his face touching the ground. Then Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right, facing Israel's left, and Manasseh on his left, facing Israel's right, and brought them close to him. But Israel crossed his hands and reached out. He put his right hand on Ephraim's head, although Ephraim was the younger son. He put his left hand on Manasseh's head, although Manasseh was older. Jacob blessed Joseph. He said: May God, in whose presence my grandfather Abraham and my father Isaac walked, may this God who has been my shepherd all my life to this very day, May the being who rescued me from all evil bless these boys! May they be called by my name and by the names of my grandfather Abraham and my father Isaac. May they have many children on the earth. Joseph saw that his father had put his right hand on Ephraim's head. Joseph did not like it. So he took his father's hand in order to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's. He said to his father: That is not right, Father! This is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head. His father refused and said: I know, Son, I know! Manasseh, too, will become a nation. He, too, will be important. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be more important than he. His descendants will become many nations. That day he blessed them. He said: Because of you, Israel will speak this blessing: 'May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!' In this way Israel put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

He said: In your opinion, what answer am I to give to these people? They said to him: If you will be a servant to this people today, caring for them and giving them a favorable answer, then they will be your servants for ever. But he paid no attention to the opinion of the elders. He went to the young men who were his advisors: What is your opinion? He asked: What answer are we to give to this people? They want me to lighten the burdens placed on them by my father. His young advisors said: This is the answer to give to the people who came to you saying: 'Your father put a hard yoke on us; will you make it less?' Say to them: 'My little finger is thicker than my father's body.' If my father put a hard yoke on you, I will make it harder! My father gave you punishment with whips, but I will give you blows with snakes.' So all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day just as the king ordered. The king gave them a harsh answer. He paid no attention to the suggestion of the elders. He gave them the answer suggested by the young advisors. He said: My father made your yoke hard, but I will make it harder! My father gave you punishment with whips, but I will give it with snakes. The king did not listen to the people. This came about by Jehovah's purpose, so that what he had said by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam, son of Nebat, might be fulfilled. When all Israel realized that the king would not respond to their request, the people in answer said to the king: What share do we have in David? What is our heritage in the son of Jesse? To your tents, O Israel; now see to your people, David. So Israel went away to their tents. Rehoboam was still king over those of the children of Israel who were living in the towns of Judah. Then King Rehoboam sent Adoniram, the overseer of the forced work. He was stoned to death by all Israel. King Rehoboam went quickly and got into his carriage to escape to Jerusalem. They told him: If you are good to these people and try to please them by speaking gently to them, then they will always be your servants. He ignored the advice the elders gave him. He sought advice from the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. He asked: What is your advice? How should we respond to these people who are asking me to lighten the burden my father put on them? The young men who had grown up with him answered: This is what you should tell them: 'My little finger is heavier than my father's whole body. If my father put a heavy burden on you, I will add to it. If my father punished you with whips, I will punish you with scorpions.'
