As they fled before Israel, the Lord threw large hailstones on them from the sky along the descent of Beth-horon all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died from the hail than the Israelites killed with the sword.

Throughout the land of Egypt, the hail struck down everything in the field, both man and beast. The hail beat down every plant of the field and shattered every tree in the field. The only place it didn’t hail was in the land of Goshen where the Israelites were.

“But if after these things you will not obey Me, I will proceed to discipline you seven times for your sins. I will break down your strong pride. I will make your sky like iron and your land like bronze,

Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you. He will close the sky, and there will be no rain; the land will not yield its produce, and you will perish quickly from the good land the Lord is giving you.

The Lord will afflict you with wasting disease, fever, inflammation, burning heat, drought, blight, and mildew; these will pursue you until you perish. The sky above you will be bronze, and the earth beneath you iron. The Lord will turn the rain of your land into falling dust; it will descend on you from the sky until you are destroyed.

This is why the showers haven’t come—
why there has been no spring rain.
You have the brazen look of a prostitute
and refuse to be ashamed.

The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought: Judah mourns;
her gates languish.

since no rain has fallen on the land.
The farmers are ashamed;

Even the doe in the field
gives birth and abandons her fawn
since there is no grass.
Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights
panting for air like jackals.

because there are no green plants.

“Son of man, say to her: You are a land that has not been cleansed, that has not received rain in the day of indignation.

I also withheld the rain from you
while there were still three months until harvest.

but no rain on another.

while a field with no rain withered.

Should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of Hosts, rain will not fall on them. And if the people of Egypt will not go up and enter, then rain will not fall on them; this will be the plague the Lord inflicts on the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Booths. This will be the punishment of Egypt and all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Booths.

You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes.

As a cloud fades away and vanishes,
so the one who goes down to Sheol will never rise again.

As dry ground and heat snatch away the melted snow,
so Sheol steals those who have sinned.

Terrors are turned loose against me;
they chase my dignity away like the wind,

Your loyalty is like the morning mist
and like the early dew that vanishes.

My brothers are as treacherous as a wadi,
as seasonal streams that overflow
and become darkened because of ice,
and the snow melts into them.
The wadis evaporate in warm weather;
they disappear from their channels in hot weather.

The man who boasts about a gift that does not exist
is like clouds and wind without rain.

These people are springs without water, mists driven by a whirlwind. The gloom of darkness has been reserved for them.

Look, a storm from the Lord!
Wrath has gone out,
a whirling storm.

For just as rain and snow fall from heaven
and do not return there
without saturating the earth

and providing seed to sow
and food to eat,
so My word that comes from My mouth
will not return to Me empty,
but it will accomplish what I please
and will prosper in what I send it to do.”

I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud,
and your sins like a mist.
Return to Me,
for I have redeemed you.

“Heavens, sprinkle from above,
and let the skies shower righteousness.
Let the earth open up
so that salvation will sprout
and righteousness will spring up with it.
I, Yahweh, have created it.

The God of Israel spoke;
the Rock of Israel said to me,
“The one who rules the people with justice,
who rules in the fear of God,
is like the morning light when the sun rises
on a cloudless morning,
the glisten of rain on sprouting grass.”

May he be like rain that falls on the cut grass,
like spring showers that water the earth.

When a king’s face lights up, there is life;
his favor is like a cloud with spring rain.

For You have been a stronghold for the poor,
a stronghold for the needy person in his distress,
a refuge from the rain, a shade from the heat.
When the breath of the violent
is like rain against a wall,
like heat in a dry land,
You subdue the uproar of barbarians.

He answered them: “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be good weather because the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can’t read the signs of the times.

He also said to the crowds: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, ‘A storm is coming,’ and so it does. And when the south wind is blowing, you say, ‘It’s going to be a scorcher!’ and it is. Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this time?
