They replied, "Some say 'John the Baptist'; others, however, say that 'He is Elijah'; others, 'Jeremiah,' or 'One of the Prophets.'"

And they told him. "Some say John the Baptist, others, Elijah, and others that you are one of the prophets."

Now Herod, the Tetrarch, heard of all that was happening; and he was perplexed because of its being said by someone that John was risen from the dead; and by some that Elijah had appeared; and by others that one of the ancient prophets was risen again.

"John the Baptist," they answered, "But others say Elijah, and others that one of the ancient prophets is risen again."

"This man is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead. That is why miraculous powers are working through him."

King Herod heard it, for the name of Jesus had become well known, People were saying, "John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and on that account these powers are working in him."

And the crowds answered, "This is the Prophet Jesus, from Nazareth, in Galilee."

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?"

"Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

And they all spoke well of him, and marveled at the words of charm that fell from his lips. "Is not this the son of Joseph?" they asked.

"Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? How is it that he now says, 'I have come down from heaven'?"

Then as Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "BEHOLD, THE MAN!"

"He is Elijah," said others. And still others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the old prophets."

So when the people saw the sign which he had performed, they said, "This is in the truth the Prophet who is to come into the world."

"All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father; and who the Father is except the Son, and he the Son wishes to reveal him."

"If you had known the free gift of God," Jesus answered, "and who it is that says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water."
