For I have been informed about you, my brothers, by Chloe's people, that there are wranglings among you.

When one of you has a grievance against his neighbor, does he dare to go to law before a heathen court, instead of laying the case before God's people?

For, in the first place, when you meet as a congregation, I hear that there are cliques among you, and I partly believe it.

I repeat it, I am apprehensive that, somehow or other, there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, rivalries, slanders, gossiping, haughty pride, and disorders,

But if you continue to bite and eat one another, beware lest you are destroyed by one another.

For wherever jealousy and rivalry exist, there will be confusion and all sorts of evil practices.

What causes wars and quarrels among you? Is it not your different desires which are ever at war within your bodies? You desire things and cannot have them, and so you commit murder.

And walk

for from the inside, that is, from the hearts of men, designs for doing evil come, sexual immorality, stealing, murder,

in which you once lived in accordance with the spirit of this present world, and the mighty prince of the air, who is always at work in the disobedient, among whom all of us, we Jews as well as you heathen,

to lay aside, with your former way of living, your old self which is on the way to destruction in accordance with its deceptive impulses;

For once we too were without understanding, disobedient, misled, habitual slaves to all sorts of passions and pleasures, spending our lives in malice and envy.

so that he no longer can spend the rest of his earthly life in harmony with human desires but in accordance with God's will.
