We are writing these things
so that our joy may be complete.

My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the Righteous One.

But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,

and by believing you may have life in His name.

This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

I have written you this brief letter through Silvanus

(I know him to be a faithful brother) to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Take your stand in it!

Ye may know

(The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him. The one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony God has given about His Son.)

What was from the beginning,
what we have heard,
what we have seen with our eyes,
what we have observed
and have touched with our hands,
concerning the Word of life—

For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”

For we know that if our temporary, earthly dwelling

is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling in the heavens, not made with hands.

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!”

Therefore, brothers, make every effort to confirm your calling and election, because if you do these things you will never stumble.

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book.

And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life.
