Wives And Husbands

1 Likewise, ye wives, be submissive to your own husbands; in order that, if any do not believe the word, they shall be gained through the deportment of their wives, without the word;

1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

1 (A)In the same way, you wives, (B)be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be (C)won without a word by the behavior of their wives,

1 In the same way, wives,(A) submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message,(B) they may be won over(a)(C) without a message by the way their wives live(D)

1 In a similar way, you wives must submit yourselves to your husbands so that, even if some of them refuse to obey the word, they may be won over without a word through your conduct as wives

2 beholding your chaste deportment which is with reverence:

2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

2 as they observe your chaste and (a)respectful behavior.

2 when they observe your pure, reverent lives.(E)

2 when they see your pure and reverent lives.

3 whose beauty, let it not be the external beauty of braiding the hairs, and wearing golds, or putting on of outer garments;

3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

3 (D)Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;

3 Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornaments(b) or fine clothes.(F)

3 Your beauty should not be an external one, consisting of braided hair or the wearing of gold ornaments and dresses.

4 but let their beauty be the hidden man of the heart, in the purity of the meek and quiet spirit, which in the sight of God is perfection complete.

4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

4 but let it be (E)the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

4 Instead, it should consist of what is inside(c) the heart(G) with the imperishable quality of a gentle(H) and quiet(I) spirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes.

4 Instead, it should be the inner disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which God values greatly.

5 For in this way in olden times the holy wives, the ones having hope toward God, were indeed accustomed to beautify themselves, submissive to their own husbands:

5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, (F)who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;

5 For in the past, the holy(J) women who put their hope(K) in God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,

5 After all, this is how holy women who set their hope on God used to make themselves beautiful in the past. They submitted themselves to their husbands,

6 as Sarah submitted to Abraham, calling him Lord: whose children you have become, doing good, and not fearing any calamity.

6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right (b)(H)without being frightened by any fear.

6 just as Sarah(L) obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and are not frightened by anything alarming.(M)

6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. You have become her daughters by doing good and by not letting anything terrify you.

7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwelling with the wife according to knowledge, as the weaker vessel, extending to them honor, as indeed the equal heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers should not be hindered.

7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

7 (I)You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with (c)(J)someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

7 Husbands,(N) in the same way, live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker nature(d)(O) yet showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

7 In a similar way, you husbands must live with your wives in an understanding manner, as with a most delicate partner. Honor them as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing may interfere with your prayers.

Called To Inherit A Blessing

8 And finally, all being like-minded, sympathetic, loving the brethren, merciful, humble:

8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

8 (d)To sum up, (K)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, (L)brotherly, (M)kindhearted, and (N)humble in spirit;

8 Now finally, all of you should be like-minded and sympathetic, should love believers,(e)(P) and be compassionate(Q) and humble,(f)

8 Finally, all of you must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love as brothers, and be compassionate and humble.

9 not giving evil for evil, or railing for railing: but on the contrary blessing; because unto this you have been called, that you may inherit the blessing.

9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

9 (O)not returning evil for evil or (P)insult for insult, but (e)giving a (Q)blessing instead; for (R)you were called for the very purpose that you might (S)inherit a blessing.

9 not paying back evil for evil(R) or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing,(S) since you were called for this, so that you can inherit a blessing.

9 Do not pay others back evil for evil or insult for insult. Instead, keep blessing them, because you were called to inherit a blessing.

10 For let the one wishing to love life, and to see good days, cease his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking guile:

10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

10 For,(T)The one who desires life, to love and see good days,Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

10 For the(T) one who wants to love lifeand to see good daysmust keep his tongue from evil(U)and his lips from speaking deceit,(V)

10 "For the person who wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

11 let him depart from evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and pursue it:

11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

11 (U)He must turn away from evil and do good;He must seek peace and pursue it.

11 and he must turn away(W) from eviland do what is good.He must seek peace(X) and pursue it,

11 He must turn away from evil and do good. He must seek peace and pursue it.

12 because the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry: but the face of the Lord is against those doing evil.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

12 (V)For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,And His ears attend to their prayer,But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

12 because the eyes of the Lord are on the righteousand His ears are open to their request.But the face of the Lord is againstthose who do what is evil.(g)

12 For the Lord watches the righteous, and he pays attention to their prayers. But the Lord opposes those who do wrong."

Suffer For Doing What Is Good

13 Who is the one about to harm you, if you may be zealots of the good?

13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

13 (W)Who is (f)there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?

13 And who will harm(h) you if you are deeply committed to what is good?(i)

13 Who will harm you if you are devoted to doing what is good?

14 But if indeed you suffer for righteousness' sake, you are happy. Fear not their fear, neither be troubled;

14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

14 But even if you should (X)suffer for the sake of righteousness, (Y)you (g)are blessed. (Z)And do not fear their (h)intimidation, and do not be troubled,

14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness,(Y) you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear(Z) or be disturbed,(AA)(j)

14 But even if you should suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. "Never be afraid of their threats, and never get upset.

15 but sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts: being always ready for an answer to every one asking you a reason for the hope which is in you, but with meekness and fear:

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

15 but (i)sanctify (AA)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (AB)to make a (j)defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (AC)hope that is in you, yet (AD)with gentleness and (k)(AE)reverence;

15 but honor(k) the Messiah(l) as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason(m) for the hope that is in you.(AB)

15 Instead, exalt the Messiah" as Lord in your lives. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you to explain the hope you have.

16 having a good conscience, in order that, in whatsoever you are calumniated, those traducing your good deportment in Christ may be ashamed.

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

16 (l)and keep a (AF)good conscience so that in the thing in which (AG)you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.

16 However, do this with gentleness and respect, keeping your conscience clear,(n)(o)(AC) so that when you are accused,(p) those who denounce your Christian life(q) will be put to shame.

16 But do this gently and respectfully, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak evil of your good conduct in the Messiah will be ashamed of slandering you.

17 For it is better, doing good, if the will of the Lord should will it, to suffer, rather than doing evil.

17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

17 For (AH)it is better, (AI)if (m)God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.

17 For it is better to suffer(AD) for doing good, if that should be God’s will,(r) than for doing evil.

17 After all, if it is the will of God, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong.

18 Because Christ indeed once died for our sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, indeed being put to death in the flesh, but quickened in spirit:

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 by which also having gone he proclaimed to the spirits in prison;

20 who at one time were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, the ark being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls were saved through the water.

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

20 who once were disobedient, when the (AO)patience of God (AP)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (AQ)the ark, in which a few, that is, (AR)eight (AS)persons, were brought safely through the (p)water.

20 who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah(AJ) while an ark was being prepared. In it a few—that is, eight people(z)(AK)—were saved through water.

21 Which antitype baptism does even now save you, not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the seeking after a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

21 (AT)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—(AU)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God (q)for a (AV)good conscience—through (AW)the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not the removal of the filth of the flesh,(AL) but the pledge(aa) of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.(AM)

21 Baptism, which is symbolized by that water, now saves you also, not by removing dirt from the body, but by asking God for a clear conscience based on the resurrection of Jesus, the Messiah,

22 who is on the right hand of God, having gone up into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being subordinated unto him.

22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
