David Returns To Achish

1 But David said in his heart, “Now I will die one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me inside the borders of Israel, and I will escape from his hand [once and for all].”

1 Then David said (a)to himself, “Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul. (A)There is nothing better for me than (b)to escape into the land of the Philistines. Saul then will despair of searching for me anymore in all the territory of Israel, and I will escape from his hand.”

1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

1 David said to himself, “One of these days I’ll be swept away by Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape immediately to the land of the Philistines.(A) Then Saul will stop searching for me everywhere in Israel, and I’ll escape from him.”

1 David told himself, "One of these days I'll perish by Saul's hand. There is nothing better for me to do than to escape to Philistine territory. Saul will give up searching for me anymore within the borders of Israel, so I'll escape from him."

2 So David and the six hundred men who were with him arose and crossed over to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

2 So David arose and crossed over, he and (B)the six hundred men who were with him, to (C)Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

2 So David set out with his 600 men(B) and went to Achish son of Maoch,(C) the king of Gath.

2 So David got up, and he and the 600 men who were with him went to Maoch's son Achish, the king of Gath.

3 And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each man with his household, and David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, [who was] Nabal’s widow.

3 And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, (D)each with his household, even David with (E)his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s (c)widow.

3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's wife.

3 David and his men stayed with Achish in Gath. Each man had his family with him,(D) and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel,(E) Nabal’s widow.

3 David stayed with Achish in Gath along with his men, each of whom was with his household. David had his two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, who had been the wife of Nabal of Carmel.

4 When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.

4 Now it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, so he no longer searched for him.

4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.

4 When it was reported to Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.

4 Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, and he did not continue to search for him.

5 Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your sight, let me be given a place [of my own] in one of the cities in the country, so that I may live there; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”

5 Then David said to Achish, “If now I have found favor in your sight, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may live there; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”

5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

5 Now David said to Achish, “If I have found favor with you, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”

5 David told Achish, "If it pleases you, give me a place in one of the outlying towns, so I may live there. Why should your servant live with you in the royal city?"

6 Then Achish gave David [the town of] Ziklag that day. Therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to (a)this day.

6 So Achish gave him Ziklag that day; therefore (F)Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day.

6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

6 That day Achish gave Ziklag(F) to him, and it still belongs to the kings of Judah today.

6 So that day Achish gave him Ziklag, and therefore, Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah until the present time.

7 The number of days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.

7 The number of days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was (G)a year and four months.

7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

7 The time that David stayed in the Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.(G)

7 David lived in Philistine territory for a year and four months.

8 Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites [the enemies of Israel that Joshua had failed to annihilate]; for they had inhabited the land from ancient times, as one comes to Shur even as far as the land of Egypt.(A)

8 Now David and his men went up and raided (H)the Geshurites and the Girzites and (I)the Amalekites; for they were the inhabitants of the land from ancient times, as you come to (J)Shur even as far as the land of Egypt.

8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.

8 David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites,(H) the Girzites,(a) and the Amalekites.(I) From ancient times they had been the inhabitants of the region through Shur(J) as far as the land of Egypt.

8 David and his men went up and raided the descendants of Geshur, the descendants of Girzi, and the Amalekites, for they had been living in the land since ancient times, from the entrance of Shur all the way to the land of Egypt.

9 David attacked the land and did not leave a man or a woman alive, but he took the sheep, the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing, and returned to Achish.

9 David (d)attacked the land and did not leave a man or a woman alive, and he (K)took away the sheep, the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing. Then he returned and came to Achish.

9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.

9 Whenever David attacked the land, he did not leave a single person alive, either man or woman, but he took flocks, herds, donkeys, camels, and clothing.(K) Then he came back to Achish,

9 David struck the land and did not leave a man or woman alive. He took sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels, and clothing, and then came back and went to Achish.

10 When Achish asked, “Where did you raid today?” David replied, “Against the Negev (the South country) of Judah, and against the Negev of the Jerahmeelites, and against the Negev of the Kenites.”

10 Now Achish said, “Where have you (L)made a raid today?” And David said, “Against the (e)Negev of Judah and against the (f)Negev of (M)the Jerahmeelites and against the (g)Negev of (N)the Kenites.”

10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

10 who inquired, “Where did you raid today?”(b)(L)David replied, “The south country of Judah,” “The south country of the Jerahmeelites,”(M) or “Against the south country of the Kenites.”(N)

10 Achish said, "Where did you raid today?"

11 David did not leave a man or a woman alive to bring news to Gath, saying [to himself], “Otherwise they will tell about us, saying, ‘This is what David has done, and this has been his practice all the time that he has lived in the country of the Philistines.’”

11 David did not leave a man or a woman alive to bring to Gath, saying, “Otherwise they will tell about us, saying, ‘So has David done and so has been his practice all the time he has lived in the country of the Philistines.’”

11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.

11 David did not let a man or woman live to be brought to Gath, for he said, “Or they will inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.’” This was David’s custom during the whole time he stayed in the Philistine territory.

11 David answered, "Against the Negev of Judah, against the Negev of the Jerahmeelites, and against the Negev of the Kenites." David did not leave a man or woman alive to bring to Gath. He told himself, "Otherwise, they'll say, "This is what David is doing, and this has been his practice all the time he has lived in Philistine territory.'"

12 Achish believed David, saying, “He has certainly become hated by his people in Israel; so he will always be my servant.”

12 So Achish believed David, saying, “He has surely made himself odious among his people Israel; therefore he will become my servant forever.”

12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.

12 So Achish trusted David, thinking, “Since he has made himself detestable to his people Israel, he will be my servant forever.”

12 Achish believed David, telling himself, "He has certainly made himself repulsive to his people in Israel. He will be my servant forever."
