He served his father's God. He obeyed God's commandments, and did not act the way the kings of Israel did.
1 Kings 12:28

It was as if he copied the evil ways of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. He took as his wife Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal, king of Zidon, and became a servant and worshipper of Baal.

His wife was Ahab's daughter. Like the family of Ahab he followed the evil ways of the kings of Israel. He sinned against Jehovah.
2 Kings 17:19
But even Judah did not obey the commands of Jehovah their God. They were guided by the rules Israel made.
