During his time of trouble King Ahaz was even more unfaithful to the Lord.

Why do you insist on being battered? Why do you continue to rebel? Your head has a massive wound, your whole body is weak.

In his pain Manasseh asked the Lord his God for mercy and truly humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.

Esther replied, "The oppressor and enemy is this evil Haman!" Then Haman became terrified in the presence of the king and queen.

Pray to me when you are in trouble! I will deliver you, and you will honor me!"

"Look, here is the man who would not make God his protector! He trusted in his great wealth and was confident about his plans to destroy others."

Lord, I know you look for faithfulness. But even when you punish these people, they feel no remorse. Even when you nearly destroy them, they refuse to be corrected. They have become as hardheaded as a rock. They refuse to change their ways.

"'For testing will come, and what will happen when the scepter, which the sword despises, is no more? declares the sovereign Lord.'

Then I will return again to my lair until they have suffered their punishment. Then they will seek me; in their distress they will earnestly seek me.

Thus people were scorched by the terrible heat, yet they blasphemed the name of God, who has ruling authority over these plagues, and they would not repent and give him glory.
