"Number the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral houses and tribes, numbering every male from a month old and above."

The tribes and the ancestral houses of the descendants of Gershon were numbered

"Tell the Israelis to take a rod one from each ancestral house, that is, one from every leader, for a total of twelve rods. Write each tribal name on his rod.
