During Pekah's reign over Israel, King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, including all the territory of Naphtali. He deported the people to Assyria.

The king of Assyria marched through the whole land. He attacked Samaria and besieged it for three years.

Certainly you have heard how the kings of Assyria have annihilated all lands. Do you really think you will be rescued?

Is not Calneh like Carchemish? Hamath like Arpad? Samaria like Damascus?

Were the nations whom my predecessors destroyed -- the nations of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden in Telassar -- rescued by their gods?

The king uttered these words: "Is this not the great Babylon that I have built for a royal residence by my own mighty strength and for my majestic honor?"

Due to the greatness that he bestowed on him, all peoples, nations, and language groups were trembling with fear before him. He killed whom he wished, he spared whom he wished, he exalted whom he wished, and he brought low whom he wished.

They talked about the God of Jerusalem as if he were one of the man-made gods of the nations of the earth.

Have any of the gods of the nations actually rescued his land from the power of the king of Assyria?

They have burned the gods of the nations, for they are not really gods, but only the product of human hands manufactured from wood and stone. That is why the Assyrians could destroy them.

Our God is in heaven! He does whatever he pleases!

Don't panic! Don't be afraid! Did I not tell you beforehand and decree it? You are my witnesses! Is there any God but me? There is no other sheltering rock; I know of none.

You people of Israel should tell those nations this: 'These gods did not make heaven and earth. They will disappear from the earth and from under the heavens.'

And you see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a large crowd, not only in Ephesus but in practically all of the province of Asia, by saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.

With regard then to eating food sacrificed to idols, we know that "an idol in this world is nothing," and that "there is no God but one."
