Jehoash/Joash Reigns In Judah

1 In the seventh year of Jehu reigned hath Jehoash, and forty years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother is Zibiah of Beer-Sheba,

1 In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign; and forty years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

1 In the seventh year of Jehu, (A)Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

1 In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash became king and reigned 40 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah, who was from Beer-sheba.(A)

1 ascending to the throne in the seventh year of the reign of Jehu and then reigning for 40 years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah from Beer-sheba.

2 and Jehoash doth that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah all his days in which Jehoiada the priest directed him,

2 And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

2 Jehoash did right in the sight of the Lord all his days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

2 Throughout the time Jehoiada(B) the priest instructed(C) him, Joash did what was right in the Lord’s sight.(D)

2 Jehoash did what the LORD considered to be right during the entire time when Jehoiada the priest was instructing him,

3 only, the high places have not turned aside, still are the people sacrificing and making perfume in high places.

3 But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

3 Only (B)the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

3 Yet the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.(E)

3 except that the high places were not demolished, so the people continued to sacrifice and burn incense on the high places.

Temple Repairs Planned

4 And Jehoash saith unto the priests, 'All the money of the sanctified things that is brought in to the house of Jehovah, the money of him who is passing over, each the money of his valuation, all the money that it goeth up on the heart of a man to bring in to the house of Jehovah,

4 And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man's heart to bring into the house of the LORD,

4 Then Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the sacred things (C)which is brought into the house of the Lord, in current money, both (D)the money of each man’s assessment and all the money (a)which any man’s heart prompts him to bring into the house of the Lord,

4 Then(F) Joash said to the priests, “All the dedicated money brought to the Lord’s temple,(G) census money,(H) money from vows,(I) and all money voluntarily given(J) for the Lord’s temple,

4 Jehoash spoke to the priests about all of the proceeds of the consecrated gifts that were being brought into the LORD's Temple, cash from every man who was traveling through the area, cash obtained by personal assessment, and all the cash that came through voluntary gifts into the LORD's Temple:

5 do the priests take to them, each from his acquaintance, and they strengthen the breach of the house, in all places where there is found a breach.'

5 Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the house, wheresoever any breach shall be found.

5 let the priests take it for themselves, each from his acquaintance; and they shall repair the (b)damages of the house wherever any damage may be found.”

5 each priest is to take from his assessor(a) and repair whatever damage to the temple is found.”(b)(K)

5 "Let the priests get support for themselves from their own donors, and let them repair the Temple wherever a leak in need of repair is discovered."

6 And it cometh to pass, in the twenty and third year of king Jehoash, the priests have not strengthened the breach of the house,

6 But it was so, that in the three and twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.

6 But it came about that in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash (E)the priests had not repaired the damages of the house.

6 But by the twenty-third year(L) of the reign of King Joash, the priests had not repaired the damage(c) to the temple.(M)

6 But 23 years into the reign of King Jehoash, the priests still had not repaired the leaks in the Temple.

7 and king Jehoash calleth to Jehoiada the priest, and to the priests, and saith unto them, 'Wherefore are ye not strengthening the breach of the house? and now, receive no money from your acquaintances, but for the breach of the house give it.'

7 Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.

7 Then King Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and for the other priests and said to them, “Why do you not repair the damages of the house? Now therefore take no more money from your acquaintances, but pay it for the damages of the house.”

7 So King Joash called Jehoiada(N) the priest and the other priests and said, “Why haven’t you repaired the temple’s damage? Since you haven’t, don’t take any money from your assessors; instead, hand it over for the repair of the temple.”

7 So King Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, along with other priests, and asked them, "Why haven't you fixed the leaks in the Temple? Stop receiving donations from your acquaintances for repairing the leaks in the Temple."

8 And the priests consent not to receive money from the people, nor to strengthen the breach of the house,

8 And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.

8 So the priests agreed that they would take no more money from the people, nor repair the damages of the house.

8 So the priests agreed they would not take money from the people and they would not repair the temple’s damage.

8 So the priests agreed to receive no more cash from the people, but they didn't repair the leaks in the Temple, either.

9 and Jehoiada the priest taketh a chest, and pierceth a hole in its lid, and putteth it near the altar, on the right side, as one cometh in to the house of Jehovah, and the priests keeping the threshold have put there all the money that is brought in to the house of Jehovah.

9 But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.

9 But (F)Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in its lid and put it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the Lord; and the priests who guarded the threshold put in it all the money which was brought into the house of the Lord.

9 Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest,(O) bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the Lord’s temple; in it the priests who guarded the threshold put all the money brought into the Lord’s temple.(P)

9 So Jehoiada the priest grabbed a chest, bored an opening in its lid, and placed it next to the altar, on the right side as one enters the LORD's Temple. The priests who tended the entryway put all the money that was brought into the LORD's Temple into the chest.

10 And it cometh to pass, at their seeing that the money is abundant in the chest, that there goeth up a scribe of the king, and of the high priest, and they bind it up, and count the money that is found in the house of Jehovah,

10 And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king's scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found in the house of the LORD.

10 When they saw that there was much money in the chest, (G)the king’s scribe and the high priest came up and tied it in bags and counted the money which was found in the house of the Lord.

10 Whenever they saw there was a large amount of money in the chest, the king’s secretary(Q) and the high priest would go to the Lord’s temple and count the money found there and tie it up in bags.(R)

10 As a result, whenever they noticed that there was a lot of money in the chest, the king's secretary and the high priest went forward, put the money in bags, counted the money that had been given over to the LORD's Temple,

11 and have given the weighed money into the hands of those doing the work, those inspecting the house of Jehovah, and they bring it out to those working in the wood, and to builders who are working in the house of Jehovah,

11 And they gave the money, being told, into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of the LORD: and they laid it out to the carpenters and builders, that wrought upon the house of the LORD,

11 They gave the money which was weighed out into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the Lord; and they (c)paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the Lord;

11 Then they would put the counted money into the hands of those doing the work—those who oversaw the Lord’s temple. They in turn would pay it out to those working on the Lord’s temple—the carpenters, the builders,

11 and disbursed the cash directly into the hands of those who did the work and who were in charge of the oversight of the LORD's Temple. They paid it to the carpenters and builders who worked on the LORD's Temple,

12 and to those repairing the wall, and to hewers of stone, and to buy wood and hewn stones to strengthen the breach of the house of Jehovah, and for all that goeth out on the house, to strengthen it.

12 And to masons, and hewers of stone, and to buy timber and hewed stone to repair the breaches of the house of the LORD, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it.

12 and (H)to the masons and the stonecutters, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the damages to the house of the Lord, and for all that was (d)laid out for the house to repair it.

12 the masons, and the stonecutters—and would use it to buy timber and quarried stone to repair the damage to the Lord’s temple(S) and for all spending for temple repairs.

12 to masons and stonecutters, and for procurement of timber and quarried stone for making repairs to the LORD's Temple, and for all outlays needed for repairs of the Temple.

13 Only, there is not made for the house of Jehovah basins of silver, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, any vessel of gold, and vessel of silver, out of the money that is brought into the house of Jehovah;

13 Howbeit there were not made for the house of the LORD bowls of silver, snuffers, basons, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of the LORD:

13 But (I)there were not made for the house of the Lord (J)silver cups, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver from the money which was brought into the house of the Lord;

13 However, no silver bowls, wick trimmers, sprinkling basins, trumpets, or any articles of gold or silver(T) were made for the Lord’s temple from the money brought into the temple.

13 But no provision was included for the LORD's Temple from the money that was brought into the LORD's Temple for silver basins, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, or any vessels made of gold or silver,

14 for to those doing the work they give it, and they have strengthened with it the house of Jehovah,

14 But they gave that to the workmen, and repaired therewith the house of the LORD.

14 for they gave that to those who did the work, and with it they repaired the house of the Lord.

14 Instead, it was given to those doing the work, and they repaired the Lord’s temple with it.

14 because that money had been allocated to the workmen who were repairing the LORD's Temple.

15 and they do not reckon with the men into whose hand they give the money to give to those doing the work, for in faithfulness they are dealing.

15 Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully.

15 Moreover, (K)they did not require an accounting from the men into whose hand they gave the money to pay to those who did the work, for they dealt faithfully.

15 No accounting was required from the men who received the money to pay those doing the work, since they worked with integrity.(U)

15 Furthermore, they required no accounting from the men into whose hand they had paid the money to do the work, because the workers acted in good faith.

16 The money of a trespass-offering, and the money of sin-offerings is not brought in to the house of Jehovah -- for the priests it is.

16 The trespass money and sin money was not brought into the house of the LORD: it was the priests'.

16 The (L)money from the guilt offerings and (M)the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the Lord; (N)it was for the priests.

16 The money from the restitution offering and the sin offering was not brought to the Lord’s temple since it belonged to the priests.(V)

16 The money from the guilt offerings and from the sin offerings was not brought into the LORD's Temple, because it was allocated to the priests.

Hazael Threatens Judah

17 Then go up doth Hazael king of Aram, and fighteth against Gath, and captureth it, and Hazael setteth his face to go up against Jerusalem;

17 Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

17 Then (O)Hazael king of Aram went up and fought against Gath and captured it, and (P)Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

17 At that time Hazael(W) king of Aram marched up and fought against Gath and captured it. Then he planned to attack Jerusalem.(X)

17 Later, King Hazael of Aram invaded and attacked Gath, captured it, and then set out to approach Jerusalem.

18 and Jehoash king of Judah taketh all the sanctified things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had sanctified, and his own sanctified things, and all the gold that is found in the treasures of the house of Jehovah and of the house of the king, and sendeth to Hazael king of Aram, and he goeth up from off Jerusalem.

18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.

18 (Q)Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and (R)his own sacred things and all the gold that was found among the treasuries of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house, and sent them to Hazael king of Aram. Then he went away from Jerusalem.

18 So King Joash of Judah took all the consecrated items that his ancestors—Judah’s kings Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah—had consecrated, along with his own consecrated items and all the gold found in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and in the king’s palace, and he sent them to Hazael king of Aram.(Y) Then Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.

18 So King Jehoash of Judah took all of the sacred things that his ancestors Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, had dedicated, along with his own dedicated things, and all the gold that could be located within the treasure vaults of the LORD's Temple and in the king's palace, and paid off King Hazael of Aram. Then Hazael left Jerusalem.
