But about midnight, as Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,

"Blessed are those who have endured persecution for their uprightness, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them!

Then he said to them, "My heart is almost breaking. You must stay here and keep watch with me."

"Blessed are you when people hate you and exclude you and denounce you and spurn the name you bear as evil, on account of the Son of Man.

So they went out from before the council, glad that they had been thought worthy to bear disgrace for the sake of Jesus,

More than that, we ought to glory in our troubles, for we know that trouble produces endurance,

Be happy in your hope, steadfast in time of trouble, persistent in prayer.

I am hard pressed on every side, but never cut off: perplexed, but not driven to despair;

pained, when I am always glad, poor, when I make many others rich, penniless, when really I own everything.

and speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and sacred songs. Sing praise to God with all your hearts;

Even if my life is to be poured out as a libation as you offer your faith in a service of sacrifice to God, I am glad to have it so, and I congratulate you upon it,

Goodbye, and the Lord be with you always. Again I say, goodbye.

At present I am glad to be suffering in your interest, and I am making up in my own person what is lacking in Christ's sufferings for the church, which is his body.

Let the ruling principle in your hearts be Christ's peace, for in becoming members of one body you have been called under its sway. And you must be thankful.

Always be joyful.

For Jesus in his life on earth offered prayers and entreaties, crying aloud with tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and because of his piety his prayer was heard.

You must find the greatest joy, my brothers, in being involved in various trials,

If any one of you is in trouble, he should pray. If any one is in good spirits, he should sing a hymn.

Rejoice over this, although just now perhaps distressed by various trials;

If you are being abused for the sake of Christ, you are blessed, because the glorious Spirit of God is resting upon you.
