For two whole years Paul stayed in a house which he rented for himself, welcoming all who came to see him,

Three days after Festus had entered upon his province, he left Caesarea and went up to Jerusalem.

While Paul was making this defense, Festus called out loudly: "You are mad, Paul; your great learning is driving you mad."

And, when he saw that the Jews were pleased with this, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the Festival of the Unleavened Bread.)

But, as Festus wished to gain popularity with the Jews, he interrupted Paul with the question: "Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?"

And Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and, after scourging Jesus, gave him up to be crucified.

Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.

Is this, I ask, trying to conciliate men, or God? Am I seeking to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I should not be a servant of Christ.
