Daniel's Vision Of Four Beasts And The Son Of Man

1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, saw Daniel a dream, and a vision was in his head upon his bed. Which dream he wrote, and the sum of the matter is this:

1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a (A)dream and visions (a)in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he (B)wrote the dream down and related the (b)following summary of (c)it.

1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters.

1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream with visions in his mind(A) as he was lying in his bed. He wrote down the dream,(B) and here is the summary(a) of his account.

1 In the first year of the reign of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel dreamed a dream, receiving visions in his mind while in bed, after which he recorded the dream, relating this summary of events.

2 Daniel spake and said, "I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the sea,

2 Daniel (d)said, “I was (C)looking in my vision by night, and behold, the (D)four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea.

2 Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.

2 Daniel said, “In my vision at night I was watching, and suddenly the four winds of heaven(C) stirred up the great sea.

2 Daniel said, "I observed the vision during the night. Look! The four winds of the skies were stirring up the Mediterranean Sea.

3 and four great beasts came up from the sea, one unlike another.

3 And four great (E)beasts were coming up from the sea, different from one another.

3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another.

3 Four huge beasts(D) came up from the sea,(E) each different from the other.

3 Four magnificent animals were rising from the sea, each different from the other.

4 The first was as a Lion, and yet had he Eagle's wings. I saw, that his wings were plucked from him, and he taken away from the earth: that he stood upon his feet as a man, and that there was given him a man's heart.

4 The first was (F)like a lion and had the wings of an eagle. I kept looking until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man; a human (e)mind also was given to it.

4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it.

4 “The first was like a lion(F) but had eagle’s wings. I continued watching until its wings were torn off. It was lifted up from the ground, set on its feet like a man, and given a human mind.

4 The first resembled a lion, but it had eagles' wings. I continued to watch until its wings were plucked off, it was lifted up off the ground, and it was forced to stand on two feet like a man. A human soul was imparted to it.

5 Behold, the second beast was like a Bear, and stood upon the one side. Among his teeth in his mouth he had three great long teeth, and it was said unto him, 'Arise, eat up, much flesh.'

5 And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, ‘Arise, devour much meat!’

5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.

5 “Suddenly, another beast appeared, a second one, that looked like a bear.(G) It was raised up on one side, with three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up! Gorge yourself on flesh.’

5 "Then look! a second animal resembling a bear followed it. It was raised up on one side, with three ribs held between the teeth in its mouth. Therefore people kept telling it, "Get up and devour lots of meat!'

6 Then I looked, and behold, there was another like unto a leopard: this had wings as a fowl, even four upon the back. This beast had four heads, and there was power given him.

6 After this I kept looking, and behold, another one, (G)like a leopard, which had on its (f)back four wings of a bird; the beast also had (H)four heads, and dominion was given to it.

6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.

6 “While I was watching, another beast appeared. It was like a leopard(H) with four wings of a bird on its back. It had four heads(I) and was given authority to rule.

6 "After this, I continued to watch and look! there was another one, resembling a leopard with four birds' wings on its back. The animal also had four heads, and authority was imparted to it.

7 After this I saw in a vision by night, and behold, the fourth beast was grim and horrible, and marvelous strong. It had great iron teeth, it devoured and destroyed, and stamped the residue under feet. It was far unlike the other beasts that were before it: for it had ten horns, whereof I took good heed.

7 After this I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, a (I)fourth beast, dreadful and terrifying and extremely strong; and it had large iron teeth. It devoured and crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had (J)ten horns.

7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

7 “While I was watching in the night visions, a fourth beast(J) appeared, frightening and dreadful, and incredibly strong, with large iron teeth. It devoured and crushed, and it trampled with its feet whatever was left. It was different from all the beasts before it, and it had 10 horns.(K)

7 "After this, I continued to observe the night visions. And look! there was a fourth awe-inspiring, terrifying, and viciously strong animal! It had large, iron teeth. It devoured and crushed things, and trampled under its feet whatever remained. Different from all of the other previous animals, it had ten horns.

8 And behold, there came up among them, another like horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked away. Behold, this horn had eyes like a man, and a mouth speaking presumptuous things.

8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, (K)another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, (g)this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man and (L)a mouth uttering great boasts.

8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

8 “While I was considering the horns, suddenly another horn,(L) a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. There were eyes in this horn like a man’s, and it had a mouth that spoke arrogantly.(M)

8 "While I was thinking about the horns look another horn, this time a little one, grew up among them. Three of the first horns were yanked up by their roots right in front of it. Look! It had eyes like those of a human being and a mouth that boasted with audacious claims."

The Ancient Of Days And The Son Of Man

9 "I looked till the seats were prepared, and till the Ancient of Days sat him down. His clothing was white as snow, and the hairs of his head like the pure wool. His throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as the burning fire.

9 “I kept lookingUntil (M)thrones were set up,And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His (N)vesture was like white snowAnd the (O)hair of His head like pure wool. His (P)throne was (h)ablaze with flames,Its (Q)wheels were a burning fire.

9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.

9 “As I kept watching, thrones were set in place,(N)and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His clothing was white like snow,(O)and the hair of His head like whitest wool.(P)His throne was flaming fire;(Q)its wheels were blazing fire.(R)

9 "I kept on watching until the Ancient of Days was seated. His clothes were white, like snow, and the hair on his head was like pure wool. His throne burned with flaming fire, and its wheels burned with fire.

10 There drew forth a fiery stream, and went out from him. A thousand times a thousand served him. Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The judgment was set, and the books opened.

10 “A river of (R)fire was flowingAnd coming out from before Him;(S)Thousands upon thousands were attending Him,And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him;The (T)court sat,And (U)the books were opened.

10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from His presence.Thousands upon thousands(S) served Him;ten thousand times ten thousand(T) stood before Him.The court was convened,(U)and the books were opened.(V)

10 A river of fire flowed out from before him. Thousands upon thousands were serving him, with millions upon millions waiting before him. The court sat in judgment, and record books were unsealed.

11 Then took I heed there unto, because of the voice of the proud words, which the horn spake. I beheld, till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given over to be burnt in the fire.

11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the (i)boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the (V)burning (j)fire.

11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.

11 “I watched, then, because of the sound of the arrogant words the horn was speaking. As I continued watching, the beast was killed and its body destroyed and given over to the burning fire.(W)

11 "I continued watching because of the audacious words that the horn was speaking. I kept observing until the animal was killed and its body destroyed and given over to burning fire.

12 As for the power of the other beasts also, it was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a time and season.

12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time.

12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.

12 As for the rest of the beasts, their authority to rule was removed, but an extension of life was granted to them for a certain period of time.(X)

12 Now as to the other animals, their authority was removed, but they were granted a reprieve from execution for an appointed period of time."

The Son Of Man Is Given Dominion

13 I saw in a vision by night, and behold, there came one in the clouds of heaven like the Son of Man - which went unto the Ancient of Days, before whom they brought him.

13 “I kept looking in the night visions,And behold, with the clouds of heavenOne like a (W)Son of Man was coming,And He came up to the Ancient of DaysAnd was presented before Him.

13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

13 I continued watching in the night visions, and I saw One like a son of man(Y)coming with the clouds of heaven.(Z)He approached the Ancient of Daysand was escorted before Him.

13 "I continued to observe the night vision and look! someone like the Son of Man was coming, accompanied by heavenly clouds. He approached the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.

14 Then gave he him power and dignity regal, that all people, tribes and tongues should serve him. His power is an everlasting power, which shall never be put down: and his kingdom endureth uncorrupt.

14 “And to Him was given (X)dominion,Glory and (k)(Y)a kingdom,(Z)That all the peoples, nations and men of every (l)languageMight serve Him.(AA)His dominion is an everlasting dominionWhich will not pass away;(AB)And His kingdom is oneWhich will not be destroyed.

14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

14 He was given authority to rule,(AA)and glory, and a kingdom;so that those of every people, nation, and language(AB)should serve(AC) Him.His dominion is an everlasting(AD) dominionthat will not pass away, and His kingdom is onethat will not be destroyed.

14 To him dominion was bestowed, along with glory and a kingdom, so that all nations, nations, and languages are to serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion it will never pass away and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed."

Daniel Explains And Interprets The Vision

15 "My heart was vexed, and I, Daniel, had a troubled spirit within me, and the visions of my head made me afraid:

15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed (m)within me, and the (AC)visions (n)in my mind kept (AD)alarming me.

15 I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.

15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit was deeply distressed within me,(b) and the visions in my mind terrified me.(AE)

15 "Now as for me, Daniel, I was emotionally troubled, and what I had seen in the visions kept alarming me.

16 till I gat me to one of them that stood by, to know the truth, concerning all these things. So he told me, and made me understand the interpretation of these things.

16 I approached one of those who were (AE)standing by and began asking him the (o)exact meaning of all this. So he (AF)told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things:

16 I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.

16 I approached one of those who were standing by and asked him(AF) the true meaning of all this. So he let me know the interpretation of these things:(AG)

16 So I approached one of those who was standing nearby and began to ask the meaning of all of this. He spoke to me and caused me to understand the interpretation of these things.

17 'These four great beasts, are four kings which shall arise out of the earth.

17 ‘These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth.

17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.

17 ‘These huge beasts, four in number, are four kings who will rise from the earth.

17 He said, "These four great animals are four kings who will rise to power from the earth.

18 But the high saints shall receive a kingdom, and possess a kingdom, forever: even for ever and ever.'

18 But the (p)(AG)saints of the Highest One will (AH)receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, (q)for all ages to come.’

18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.

18 But the holy ones of the Most High will receive the kingdom and possess it forever, yes, forever and ever.’(AH)

18 But the saints of the Highest will receive the kingdom forever, inheriting it forever and ever.'

19 After this, I required diligently to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was so far unlike the other beasts, and so horrible: whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass: which devoured and destroyed, and stamped the residue under his feet.

19 “Then I desired to know the (r)exact meaning of the (AI)fourth beast, which was different from all (s)the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet,

19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet;

19 “Then I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast,(AI) the one different from all the others, extremely terrifying, with iron teeth and bronze claws, devouring, crushing, and trampling with its feet whatever was left.

19 "I wanted to learn the precise significance of the fourth animal that was different from all the others, extremely awe-inspiring, with iron teeth and bronze claws, and that had devoured and crushed things, trampling under its feet whatever remained.

20 I desired also to know the truth, as touching the ten horns that he had upon his head, and this other which came up afterward, before whose face there fell down three: which horn had eyes and a mouth that spake presumptuous things, and looked with a grimmer visage than his fellows.

20 and the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came up, and before which three of them fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts and (t)which was larger in appearance than its associates.

20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.

20 I also wanted to know about the 10 horns(AJ) on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three fell—the horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spoke arrogantly,(AK) and that was more visible than the others.

20 Also, I wanted to learn the significance of the ten horns on its head and the other horn that had arisen, before which three of them had fallen that is, the horn with eyes and a mouth that uttered magnificent things and which was greater in appearance than its fellows.

21 I beheld, and the same horn made battle against the saints - yea, and gat the victory of them -

21 I kept looking, and that horn was (AJ)waging war with the (u)saints and overpowering them

21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;

21 As I was watching, this horn waged war(AL) against the holy ones and was prevailing over them

21 "As I continued to watch, that same horn waged war against the saints, and was prevailing against them

22 till the time that the Ancient of Days came, that the judgment was given to the chiefest saints; and till the time that the saints had the kingdom in possession.

22 until the Ancient of Days came and (AK)judgment was (v)passed in favor of the (w)saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the (x)saints took possession of the kingdom.

22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

22 until the Ancient of Days arrived and a judgment(AM) was given in favor of the holy ones of the Most High, for the time had come, and the holy ones took possession of the kingdom.

22 until the Ancient of Days arrived to pass judgment in favor of the saints of the Highest One and the time came for the saints to take possession of the kingdom.

23 He gave me this answer, 'That fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth: it shall be more than all other kingdoms, it shall devour, tread down, and destroy all other lands.

23 “Thus he said: ‘The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it.

23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

23 “This is what he said: ‘The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, different from all the other kingdoms. It will devour the whole earth, trample it down, and crush it.

23 So he said:

24 The ten horns, are ten kings that shall arise out of that kingdom, after whom there shall stand up another, which shall be greater than the first.

24 As for the (AL)ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them, and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings.

24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

24 The 10 horns(AN) are 10 kings who will rise from this kingdom. Another, different from the previous ones, will rise after them and subdue three kings.

24 "The fourth animal will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, different from all the kingdoms. It will devour the entire earth, trampling it down and crushing it. Now as to the ten horns, ten kings will rise to power from this kingdom, and another king will rise to power after them. He will be different from the previous kings, and will defeat three kings.

25 He shall subdue three kings, and shall speak words against the highest of all: he shall destroy the saints of the most highest, and think that he may change times and laws. They shall be given under his power, until a time, two times, and a half a time.

25 He will (AM)speak (y)out against the (AN)Most High and (AO)wear down the (z)saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make (AP)alterations in times and in law; and (aa)they will be given into his hand for a (ab)(AQ)time, (ac)times, and half a (ad)time.

25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

25 He will speak words against the Most High(AO) and oppress(c) the holy ones(AP) of the Most High. He will intend to change religious festivals(d) and laws,(AQ) and the holy ones will be handed over to him for a time, times, and half a time.(e)(AR)

25 He'll speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One. He'll attempt to alter times and laws, and they'll be given into his control for a time, times, and half a time.

26 But the judgment shall be kept, so that his power shall be taken from him: for he shall be destroyed, and perish at the last.

26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be (AR)taken away, (ae)annihilated and destroyed (af)forever.

26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

26 But the court will convene,(AS) and his dominion will be taken away, to be completely destroyed forever.(AT)

26 Nevertheless, the court will convene, and his authority will be removed, annulled, and destroyed forever.

27 As for the kingdom, power, and all might that is under the heaven: it shall be given to the holy people of the most highest, whose kingdom is everlasting. Yea, all powers shall serve and obey him.'

27 Then the (ag)(AS)sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the (ah)saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an (AT)everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will (AU)serve and obey Him.’

27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

27 The kingdom, dominion, and greatness of the kingdoms under all of heaven will be given to the people, the holy ones of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom,(AU) and all rulers will serve and obey Him.’

27 Then the kingdom, authority, and magnificence of all nations of the earth will be given to the people who are the saints of the Highest One. His kingdom will endure forever, and all authorities will serve him and obey him.'

28 Thus far extend the words. Nevertheless, I Daniel was so vexed in my thoughts, that my countenance changed, but the words I kept still in my heart."

28 (ai)At this point the revelation ended. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts were (AV)greatly alarming me and my (aj)face grew pale, but I (AW)kept the matter (ak)to myself.”

28 Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

28 “This is the end of the interpretation. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts terrified me greatly,(AV) and my face turned pale,(f) but I kept the matter to myself.”(AW)

28 "At this point the vision ended. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts continued to alarm me, and I lost my natural color, but I kept quiet about the matter."
