Jehovah said: I have seen how my people are suffering as slaves in Egypt. I have heard them beg for my help because of the way they are being mistreated. I feel sorry for them.

Finally, the men in charge of the slaves went to the king and asked: Why are you treating us like this?

Jehovah said to Abram: Know this for sure; your offspring will be strangers (aliens) in a land that is not theirs. They will be slaves there, and they shall be oppressed for four hundred years.

Our ancestors went to Egypt. We lived there for many years. The Egyptians mistreated our ancestors and us.

The Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us. They imposed hard labor on us.

Burdens

After Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people (his brothers) were hard at work. He saw an Egyptian beating one of them.

The king of Egypt replied: Moses and Aaron, why do you distract the people from their work? Get back to work!

Though you stayed among the sheep pens, you will be like the wings of a dove covered with silver, its feathers with yellow gold.

I relieved his shoulder of the burden. His hands were freed from the basket.

They went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people.

Raamses

Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt. He gave them property in the best of the land near the city of Rameses. This was as the king had commanded.

Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
