The Announcement Of The Imminent Coming Of The Exile

1 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

1 The word of the LORD also came unto me, saying,

1 The word of the Lord came to me:

1 This message came to me from the LORD:

1 The word of the Lord also came to me, saying,

2 “Son of man, you live in the (A)midst of the (B)rebellious house, who (C)have eyes to see but do not see, ears to hear but do not hear; for they are a rebellious house.

2 Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.

2 “Son of man, you are living among a rebellious house.(A) They have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear,(B) for they are a rebellious house.(C)

2 "Son of Man, you live in a rebellious house that has eyes to see, but they can't see, and ears to hear, but they can't hear, since they're a rebellious house.

2 “Son of man, you live among a rebellious house, who have eyes to see but do not see, who have ears to hear but do not hear; for they are a rebellious people.(A)

3 Therefore, son of man, prepare for yourself baggage for exile and go into exile by day in their sight; even go into exile from your place to another place in their sight. (D)Perhaps they will (a)understand though they are a rebellious house.

3 Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a rebellious house.

3 “Son of man, get your bags ready for exile and go into exile in their sight during the day. You will go into exile from your place to another place while they watch; perhaps they will understand, though they are a rebellious house.

3 "So now, Son of Man, you are to prepare your luggage for a trip into exile, and then you are to leave during the daytime so they see you leaving. Leave from your place to another while they're watching. Then perhaps they'll realize that they're a rebellious house.

3 Therefore, son of man, prepare your belongings for exile, and move into exile during the day when they will see you; even go into exile from your place to another place as they watch. Perhaps they will understand even though they are a rebellious people.

4 Bring your baggage out by day in their sight, as baggage for exile. Then you will go out (E)at evening in their sight, as those going into exile.

4 Then shalt thou bring forth thy stuff by day in their sight, as stuff for removing: and thou shalt go forth at even in their sight, as they that go forth into captivity.

4 During the day, bring out your bags like an exile’s bags while they look on. Then in the evening go out in their sight like those going into exile.

4 "Bring out your luggage, like you're packing to go into exile, and do this during the daytime while they're watching you. Later that evening, leave while they're watching you like someone heading into exile.

4 Bring your (a)provisions and supplies out during the day as they watch, as provisions and supplies for [going into] exile. Then you shall go out at evening as they watch, as those going into exile.

5 Dig a hole through the wall in their sight and (b)go out through it.

5 Dig thou through the wall in their sight, and carry out thereby.

5 As they watch, dig through the wall and take the bags out through it.

5 While they continue to watch, dig a hole for yourself in the wall and enter through it.

5 Dig through the wall as they watch and go out through the hole.

6 Load the baggage on your shoulder in their sight and carry it out in the dark. You shall (F)cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have set you as a (G)sign to the house of Israel.”

6 In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulders, and carry it forth in the twilight: thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the ground: for I have set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.

6 And while they look on, lift the bags to your shoulder and take them out in the dark; cover your face so that you cannot see the land. For I have made you a sign to the house of Israel.”(D)

6 "While they're watching, carry your luggage on your shoulder and go out in total darkness. Cover your face so that you won't see the land, because I'm using you as a sign to Israel's house."

6 As they look on, load the provisions and supplies on your shoulder and carry it out in the dark. You shall cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have set you as a sign to the house of Israel.”

7 I (H)did so, as I had been commanded. By day I (I)brought out my baggage like the baggage of an exile. Then in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands; I went out in the dark and carried the baggage on my shoulder in their sight.

7 And I did so as I was commanded: I brought forth my stuff by day, as stuff for captivity, and in the even I digged through the wall with mine hand; I brought it forth in the twilight, and I bare it upon my shoulder in their sight.

7 So I did just as I was commanded. In the daytime I brought out my bags like an exile’s bags. In the evening I dug through the wall by hand; I took them out in the dark, carrying them on my shoulder in their sight.

7 I did just as I was commanded. I brought out the luggage as if it were luggage for exile. I did this during the day. Then in the evening I dug a hole in the wall with my hand and brought the luggage out in total darkness and carried it out on my shoulder while they were watching.

7 I did as I had been commanded. I brought out my provisions and supplies during the day, like the provisions and supplies of an exile, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands. I brought out my provisions and supplies in the dark, carrying it on my shoulder as they watched.

8 In the morning the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

8 And in the morning came the word of the LORD unto me, saying,

8 Then the word of the Lord came to me in the morning:

8 The next morning, this message came to me from the LORD:

8 In the morning the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

9 “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the (J)rebellious house, said to you, ‘(K)What are you doing?’

9 Son of man, hath not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said unto thee, What doest thou?

9 “Son of man, hasn’t the house of Israel, that rebellious house,(E) asked you, ‘What are you doing?’(F)

9 "Son of Man, didn't the house of Israel, that rebellious house, ask you, "What are you doing?'

9 “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, asked you, ‘What you are doing?’

10 Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord (c)God, “This (d)(L)burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem as well as all the house of Israel who are (e)in it.”’

10 Say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; This burden concerneth the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel that are among them.

10 Say to them: This is what the Lord God says: This oracle is about the prince(a) in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are living there.(b)

10 Answer them, "This is what the Lord GOD says, "This oracle concerns the prince of Jerusalem and the whole of Israel's house that is in their midst.

10 Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “This (b)oracle (a burden to be carried) concerns the prince (Zedekiah) in Jerusalem as well as all the house of Israel who are there.”’

11 Say, ‘I am (f)a (M)sign to you. As I have done, so it will be done to them; they will (N)go into exile, into captivity.’

11 Say, I am your sign: like as I have done, so shall it be done unto them: they shall remove and go into captivity.

11 You are to say, ‘I am a sign for you. Just as I have done, so it will be done to them; they will go into exile,(G) into captivity.’

11 Tell them, "I'm a sign for you. Just as I enacted it, it's going to happen to them. They'll go into exile and captivity.

11 Say, ‘I am a sign to you. As I have done, so it will be done to them; they will go into exile, into captivity.’

12 The (O)prince who is among them will load his baggage on his shoulder in the dark and go out. (g)They will dig a hole through the wall to bring it out. He will cover his face so that he can not see the land with his eyes.

12 And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the twilight, and shall go forth: they shall dig through the wall to carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, that he see not the ground with his eyes.

12 The prince who is among(H) them will lift his bags to his shoulder in the dark and go out. They(c) will dig through the wall to bring him out through it. He will cover his face so he cannot see the land with his eyes.

12 Then the prince, who will be one of them, will carry his luggage on his shoulder in the dark and will go out. They'll dig a hole in the wall for him to go through. His face will be covered so that he won't be able to see the land with his eyes.

12 The prince who is among them will load his provisions and supplies on his shoulder in the dark and go out. They will dig a hole through the wall to go out. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land with his eyes.

13 I will also spread My (P)net over him, and he will be caught in My snare. And I will bring him to Babylon in the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will (Q)not see it, though he will die there.

13 My net also will I spread upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare: and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet shall he not see it, though he shall die there.

13 But I will spread My net over him, and he will be caught in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, yet he will not see it,(I) and he will die there.

13 But I'll throw my net over him. As a result, he'll be captured with my net, and with it I'll bring him to Babel, the land of the Chaldeans. He won't see it, though he'll die there.

13 I will also spread My net over him, and he will be caught in My snare. And I will bring him to Babylon, to the land of the (c)Chaldeans; yet he will (d)not see it, though he will die there.(B)

14 I will (R)scatter to every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops; and I will draw out a sword after them.

14 And I will scatter toward every wind all that are about him to help him, and all his bands; and I will draw out the sword after them.

14 I will also scatter all the attendants who surround him and all his troops to every direction of the wind,(J) and I will draw a sword to chase after them.

14 I'll scatter every attendant who surrounds him, along with his entire army, to every wind. When I unsheathe my sword to pursue them,

14 I will scatter to every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops; and I will draw out a sword after them.

15 So they will (S)know that I am the Lord when I scatter them among the nations and spread them among the countries.

15 And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall scatter them among the nations, and disperse them in the countries.

15 They will know that I am Yahweh(K) when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them among the countries.(L)

15 they'll learn that I am the LORD, when I've dispersed them among the nations and scattered them throughout the earth."'"

15 So they will know and understand fully that I am the Lord when I scatter them among the nations and disperse them among the [pagan] countries.

16 But I will (h)spare a few of them from the (T)sword, the famine and the pestilence that they may tell all their abominations among the nations where they go, and (i)may (U)know that I am the Lord.”

16 But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence; that they may declare all their abominations among the heathen whither they come; and they shall know that I am the LORD.

16 But I will spare a few of them from the sword,(M) famine, and plague so they can tell about all their detestable practices among the nations where they go. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.”

16 "But I'll preserve a few people out of the violent death, famine, and pestilence, so they can recount their detestable practices among the nations when they'll go there. Then they'll know that I am the LORD."

16 But I will leave a few [survivors] who will escape the sword, the famine, and the virulent disease, that they may confess all their repulsive (idolatrous) acts among the nations where they go, and may know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord.”

Ezekiel Dramatizes Israel's Anxiety

17 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me saying,

17 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

17 The word of the Lord came to me:

17 This message came to me from the LORD:

17 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

18 “Son of man, (V)eat your bread with trembling and drink your water with quivering and anxiety.

18 Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with carefulness;

18 “Son of man, eat your bread with(N) trembling and drink your water with shaking and anxiety.

18 "Son of Man, eat your bread with trembling and drink your water with quivering and anxiety.

18 “Son of man, eat your bread with anxiety, and drink your water with trembling and with fear.

19 Then say to the people of the land, ‘Thus says the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel, “They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with horror, because (j)their land will be (k)(W)stripped of its fullness on account of the violence of all who live in it.

19 And say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with carefulness, and drink their water with astonishment, that her land may be desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein.

19 Then say to the people of the land: This is what the Lord God says about the residents of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water in dread, for their(d)(e) land will be stripped of everything(O) in it because of the violence of all who live there.

19 Then tell the people of the land, "This is what the LORD says to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to Israel's land: "They'll eat their food in anxiety and drink their water in trepidation, because their land will be desolate in its entirety due to all the violence committed by all who live in it.

19 Then say to the people of the land, ‘Thus says the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel, “They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with horror, because their land will be stripped and looted of its fullness because of the violence of all those who live in it.

20 The inhabited (X)cities will be laid waste and the (Y)land will be a desolation. So you will know that I am the Lord.”’”

20 And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be desolate; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

20 The inhabited cities will be destroyed, and the land will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.”

20 The towns that are inhabited will lie in ruins, because the land will be devastated. Then they'll learn that I am the LORD."'"

20 The cities that are inhabited will be in ruins and the land will be deserted; and you will know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord.”’”

A Deceptive Proverb Stopped

21 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

21 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

21 Again the word of the Lord came to me:

21 Later, this message came to me from the LORD:

21 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

22 “Son of man, what is this (Z)proverb you people have concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The (AA)days are long and every (AB)vision fails’?

22 Son of man, what is that proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth?

22 “Son of man, what is this proverb you people have about the land of Israel,(P) which goes:The days keep passing by,(Q)and every vision fails?

22 "Son of Man, what's this proverb you have concerning Israel's land that says, "The days pass slowly and every vision ends in nothing.'?

22 “Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days are long and every vision fails’?

23 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “I will make this proverb cease so that they will no longer use it as a proverb in Israel.” But tell them, “(AC)The days draw near as well as the (l)fulfillment of every vision.

23 Tell them therefore, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will make this proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say unto them, The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision.

23 Therefore say to them: This is what the Lord God says: I will put a stop to this proverb, and they will not use it again in Israel.(R) But say to them: The days draw near,(S) as well as the fulfillment of every vision.

23 Therefore you are to tell them, "This is what the Lord GOD says, "I'm about to put an end to use of this proverb in Israel. It will never be used again as a proverb in Israel. Instead, tell them that the days are drawing near when every vision will be fulfilled.

23 Therefore tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “I will put an end to this proverb, and they will no longer use it as a proverb in Israel.” But say to them, “The days draw near as well as the fulfillment of every vision.

24 For there will no longer be any (m)(AD)false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel.

24 For there shall be no more any vain vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel.

24 For there will no longer be any false vision or flattering divination(T) within the house of Israel.

24 There will no longer be worthless visions and flattering divinations in the midst of Israel's house.

24 For there will no longer be any false and empty vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel.

25 For I the Lord will speak, and whatever (AE)word I speak will be performed. It will no longer be delayed, for in (AF)your days, O (AG)rebellious house, I will speak the word and perform it,” declares the Lord God.’”

25 For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord GOD.

25 But I, Yahweh, will speak whatever message I will speak, and it will be done.(U) It will no longer be delayed.(V) For in your days, rebellious house, I will speak a message and bring it to pass.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

25 Because I am the LORD, I'll speak and the message that I communicate will be accomplished without delay. While you continue to be a rebellious house, I'll speak the message and then fulfill it," declares the Lord GOD.'"

25 For I the Lord will speak, and whatever word I speak will be accomplished. It will no longer be delayed, for in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the word and I will fulfill it,” says the Lord God.’”

26 Furthermore, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

26 Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

26 The word of the Lord came to me:

26 Later, this message came to me from the LORD:

26 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

27 “Son of man, behold, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for (AH)many (n)years from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’

27 Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he seeth is for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the times that are far off.

27 “Son of man, notice that the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees concerns many years from now;(W) he prophesies about distant times.’

27 "Son of Man, pay attention! The house of Israel keeps on saying, "The vision that he's talking about concerns the distant future. He's prophesying concerning times that are far in the future!'

27 “Son of man, behold, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that Ezekiel sees is for many years from now, and he prophesies of the times that are far off.’

28 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “None of My words will be delayed any longer. Whatever word I speak will be performed,”’” declares the Lord God.

28 Therefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; There shall none of my words be prolonged any more, but the word which I have spoken shall be done, saith the Lord GOD.

28 Therefore say to them: This is what the Lord God says: None of My words will be delayed any longer. The message I speak will be fulfilled.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

28 Therefore tell them, "This is what the Lord GOD says, "None of my messages will be delayed any longer. Any message that I speak will be fulfilled," declares the Lord GOD.'"

28 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “None of My words will be delayed any longer. Whatever word I speak will be fulfilled completely,”’” says the Lord God.
