He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. He did all these things even though he gave his hand in pledge. He will not escape!”

The bramble said to the trees,
“If you really are anointing me
as king over you,
come and find refuge in my shade.
But if not,
may fire come out from the bramble
and consume the cedars of Lebanon.”

Because of the Lord’s anger, it came to the point in Jerusalem and Judah that He finally banished them from His presence. Then, Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar who had made him swear allegiance by God. He became obstinate

and hardened his heart against returning to Yahweh, the God of Israel.

For wickedness burns like a fire
that consumes thorns and briers
and kindles the forest thickets
so that they go up in a column of smoke.

All your wives and sons will be brought out to the Chaldeans. You yourself will not escape from them, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon and this city will burn down.’”

For the Israelites must live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, and without ephod or household idols.
