Abominations In The Temple And In Jerusalem

1 And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth of the month, that as I sat in my house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, the hand of the Lord Jehovah fell there upon me.

1 It came about in the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, as I was sitting in my house with the elders of Judah sitting before me, that the hand of the Lord (a)God fell on me there.

1 And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in mine house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there upon me.

1 In the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, I was sitting in my house and the elders of Judah were sitting in front of me,(A) and there the hand of the Lord God came down on me.(B)

1 In the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, I had just sat down in my house, with the elders of Judah seated in front of me. All of a sudden, the hand of the Lord GOD touched me

2 And I looked, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of fire; from the appearance of his loins and downward, fire; and from his loins and upward, as the appearance of brightness, as the look of glowing brass.

2 Then I looked, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of (b)a man; from His loins and downward there was the (A)appearance of fire, and from His loins and upward the appearance of brightness, like the appearance (B)of (c)glowing metal.

2 Then I beheld, and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire: from the appearance of his loins even downward, fire; and from his loins even upward, as the appearance of brightness, as the colour of amber.

2 I looked, and there was a form that had the appearance of a man.(a) From what seemed to be His waist down was fire, and from His waist up was something that looked bright,(C) like the gleam of amber.(D)

2 and I saw a likeness comparable to the appearance of a man. From his thighs downward there was the appearance of fire, and from his waist upward, there was the appearance of brightness that looked like brass.

3 And he stretched forth the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heavens, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entry of the inner gate that looketh toward the north, where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy.

3 He stretched out the form of a hand and caught me by a lock of my head; and the (C)Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the (d)north gate of the inner court, where the seat of the idol of jealousy, which (D)provokes to jealousy, was located.

3 And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north; where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy.

3 He stretched out what appeared to be a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God(E) to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the inner gate that faces north, where the offensive statue that provokes jealousy(F) was located.

3 The form of a hand reached out and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and sky, brought me toward Jerusalem, and in visions that came from God took me through the doors of the inner gate that faced north, where an image that provoked God's jealous anger had been erected.

4 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the appearance that I saw in the valley.

4 And behold, the (E)glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance which I saw in the plain.

4 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the vision that I saw in the plain.

4 I saw the glory of the God of Israel(G) there, like the vision I had seen in the plain.(H)

4 All of a sudden, the glory of the God of Israel was there! It looked like what I had seen back in the valley.

Pagan Practices In The Temple

5 And he said unto me, Son of man, lift up now thine eyes toward the north. And I lifted up mine eyes toward the north, and behold, northward of the gate of the altar, this image of jealousy in the entry.

5 Then He said to me, “Son of man, (F)raise your eyes now toward the north.” So I raised my eyes toward the north, and behold, to the north of the altar gate was this (G)idol of jealousy at the entrance.

5 Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.

5 The Lord said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” I looked to the north, and there was this offensive statue north of the altar gate, at the entrance.

5 Then he told me, "Son of Man, look up toward the north." So I looked off toward the north. Suddenly, off toward the north, facing the gate that led to the altar, the image that provoked God's jealousy was standing near the entrance.

6 And he said unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? the great abominations that the house of Israel commit here, to cause me to go far off from my sanctuary? And yet again thou shalt see great abominations.

6 And He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great (H)abominations which the house of Israel are committing here, so that I would be far from My sanctuary? But yet you will see still greater abominations.”

6 He said furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations.

6 He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing here, more detestable things that the house of Israel is committing,(I) so that I must depart from My sanctuary? You will see even more detestable things.”

6 Then the Spirit told me, "Son of Man, don't you see what they're doing? The house of Israel practices awful, detestable things here, so I'm going far away from my sanctuary. But you're about to see things even more detestable than these."

7 And he brought me to the entry of the court, and I looked, and behold, a hole in the wall.

7 Then He brought me to the entrance of the court, and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall.

7 And he brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold a hole in the wall.

7 Then He brought me to the entrance of the court, and when I looked there was a hole in the wall.

7 Then the Spirit brought me to the entrance of the court. As I watched, all of a sudden, there was a hole in the wall!

8 And he said unto me, Son of man, dig now through the wall; and I digged through the wall, and behold, a door.

8 He said to me, “Son of man, now (I)dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall, and behold, an entrance.

8 Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had digged in the wall, behold a door.

8 He said to me, “Son of man, dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall, and there was a doorway.

8 Then he told me, "Son of Man, dig through the wall!" So I dug into the wall. That's when I uncovered an entrance!

9 And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.

9 And He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked abominations that they are committing here.”

9 And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.

9 He said to me, “Go in and see the terrible and detestable things they are committing here.”

9 Then he told me, "Go on through that entrance, so you may see the wicked, detestable things that they're committing here."

10 And I went in and looked, and behold, every form of creeping thing and abominable beast, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall round about.

10 So I entered and looked, and behold, every form of creeping things and beasts and detestable things, with all the idols of the house of Israel, were carved on the wall all around.

10 So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about.

10 I went in and looked, and there engraved all around the wall was every form of detestable thing, crawling creatures and beasts, as well as all the idols of the house of Israel.(J)

10 So I entered, looked around, and there was every form of crawling thing, loathsome animals, and all kinds of idols from the house of Israel carved all around the wall.

11 And there stood before them seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up.

11 Standing in front of them were (J)seventy (K)elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them, each man with his (L)censer in his hand and the fragrance of the cloud of incense rising.

11 And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up.

11 Seventy elders from the house of Israel were standing before them, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan(K) standing among them. Each had a firepan in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising up.

11 I saw 70 men from the elders of the house of Israel standing among them, including Shaphan's son Jaazaniah. Each man held a censer in his hand. As the scent of the cloud of incense ascended,

12 And he said unto me, Hast thou seen, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every one in his chambers of imagery? for they say, Jehovah seeth us not; Jehovah hath forsaken the land.

12 Then He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are committing in the dark, each man in the room of his carved images? For they say, ‘(M)The Lord does not see us; the Lord has (N)forsaken the land.’”

12 Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth.

12 Then He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his idol? For they are saying, ‘The Lord does not see us. The Lord has abandoned the land.’”(L)

12 the Spirit asked me, "Do you see, Son of Man, what the elders of Israel's house are doing in secret, each in the chamber of his own carved idol? They keep saying, "God doesn't see us. The LORD has abandoned the land.'"

13 And he said unto me, Yet again thou shalt see great abominations which they do.

13 And He said to me, “Yet you will see still greater abominations which they are committing.”

13 He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do.

13 Again He said to me, “You will see even more detestable things, which they are committing.”

13 Then the Spirit told me, "You're about to see even more detestable practices that they're doing!"

14 And he brought me to the entry of the gate of Jehovah's house that was toward the north; and behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz.

14 Then He brought me to the entrance of the (O)gate of the Lord’s house which was toward the north; and behold, women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz.

14 Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD'S house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz.

14 So He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the Lord’s house, and I saw women sitting there weeping for Tammuz.

14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the gate to the LORD's Temple, which faced the north. That's where I saw women seated, weeping for Tammuz.

15 And he said unto me, Seest thou, son of man? Thou shalt yet again see greater abominations than these.

15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Yet you will see still greater abominations than these.”

15 Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations than these.

15 And He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see even more detestable things than these.”

15 Then he asked me, "Do you see this, Son of Man? You're about to see even more detestable practices than these."

16 And he brought me into the inner court of Jehovah's house, and behold, at the entry of the temple of Jehovah, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of Jehovah and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

16 Then He brought me into the inner court of the Lord’s house. And behold, at the entrance to the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their (P)backs to the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east; and (Q)they were (e)prostrating themselves eastward toward the sun.

16 And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD'S house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

16 So He brought me to the inner court of the Lord’s house, and there were about 25 men at the entrance of the Lord’s temple, between the portico and the altar,(M) with their backs to the Lord’s temple and their faces turned to the east.(N) They were bowing to the east in worship of the sun.(O)

16 Then he brought me to the inner court of the LORD's Temple. There, at the entrance to the LORD's Temple, between the porch and the altar, were 25 men, with their backs toward the LORD's Temple and facing the east, prostrating themselves to the sun.

17 And he said unto me, Seest thou, son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah to commit the abominations which they commit here, that they yet fill the land with violence, and keep provoking me afresh to anger? And behold, they put the branch to their nose.

17 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations which they have committed here, that they have (R)filled the land with violence and (S)provoked Me repeatedly? For behold, they are putting the twig to their nose.

17 Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.

17 And He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the detestable things they are practicing here, that they must also fill the land with violence(P) and repeatedly provoke Me to anger,(Q) even putting the branch to their nose?(b)(c)

17 "Do you see this, Son of Man?" he asked me. "Is it an insignificant thing for Judah's house to commit the detestable things that they're doing here? They've filled the land with violence and turned away from me, causing me to become angry again. Look how they're sniffing with their noses!

18 And I also will deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.

18 Therefore, I indeed will deal in wrath. My eye will have no pity nor will I spare; and (T)though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, yet I will not listen to them.”

18 Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

18 Therefore I will respond with wrath.(R) I will not show pity or spare them.(S) Though they cry out in My ears with a loud voice,(T) I will not listen to them.”

18 I'm going to deal with them in rage and anger. I'll show neither pity nor compassion. They'll cry loudly directly in my ears, but I won't listen to them."
