The Tower Of Babylon

1 Now the whole earth (a)spoke one language and used the same words (vocabulary).

1 Now the whole earth (a)used the same language and (b)the same words.

1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

1 At one time the whole earth had the same language and vocabulary.(a)

1 There was a time when the entire earth spoke a common language with an identical vocabulary.

2 And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and they settled there.(A)

2 It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land (A)of Shinar and (c)settled there.

2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

2 As people(b) migrated from the east,(c) they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.(A)

2 As people migrated westward, they came across a plain in the region of Shinar and settled there.

3 They said one to another, “Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly [in a kiln, to harden and strengthen them].” So they used brick for stone [as building material], and they used tar (bitumen, asphalt) for mortar.

3 They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used (B)tar for mortar.

3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

3 They said to each other, “Come, let us make oven-fired bricks.” They used brick for stone and asphalt for mortar.(B)

3 They told each other, "Come on! Let's burn bricks thoroughly." They used bricks for stone and tar for mortar.

4 They said, “Come, let us build a city for ourselves, and a tower whose top will reach into the heavens, and let us make a [famous] name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered [into separate groups] and be dispersed over the surface of the entire earth [as the Lord instructed].”(B)

4 They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top (C)will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves (D)a name, otherwise we (E)will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky.(C) Let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

4 Then they said, "Come on! Let's build ourselves a city and a tower, with its summit in the heavens, and let's make a name for ourselves so we won't be scattered over the surface of the whole earth."

5 Now the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

5 (F)The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

5 Then the Lord came down(D) to look over the city and the tower that the men were building.

5 However, the LORD descended to look over the city and the tower that the humans were building.

6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one [unified] people, and they all have the same language. This is only the beginning of what they will do [in rebellion against Me], and now no evil thing they imagine they can do will be impossible for them.

6 The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have (d)(G)the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be (e)impossible for them.

6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

6 The Lord said, “If they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

6 The LORD said, "Look! They are one people with the same language for all of them, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Nothing that they have a mind to do will be impossible for them!

7 Come, let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) go down and there confuse and mix up their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

7 Come, (H)let Us go down and there (I)confuse their (f)language, so that they will not understand one another’s (g)speech.”

7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

7 Come, let Us go down there and confuse(d) their language(e) so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”(f)

7 Come on! Let's go down there and confuse their language, so that they won't understand each other's speech."

8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the surface of the entire earth; and they stopped building the city.

8 So the Lord (J)scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

8 So from there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth,(E) and they stopped building the city.

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the surface of the whole earth, so that they had to stop building the city.

9 Therefore the name of the city was (b)Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the entire earth; and from that place the Lord scattered and dispersed them over the surface of all the earth.

9 Therefore its name was called (h)(K)Babel, because there the Lord confused the (i)language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.

9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

9 Therefore its name is called Babylon,(g)(F) for there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

9 Therefore it was called Babylon, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the surface of the entire earth.
