Abram Rescues Lot

1 And it came about in the days of Amraphel king of (A)Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of (B)Elam, and Tidal king of (a)Goiim,

1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;

1 In those days Amraphel king of Shinar,(A) Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam,(a)(B) and Tidal(b) king of Goiim(c)

1 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar, Arioch was king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer was king of Elam, and Tidal was king of the Goiim,

1 In the days of the [Eastern] kings Amraphel of Shinar, Arioch of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer of Elam, and Tidal of Goiim,

2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of (C)Admah, and Shemeber king of (D)Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, (E)Zoar).

2 That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.

2 waged war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim,(C) as well as the king of Bela (that is, Zoar(D)).

2 they engaged in war against King Bera of Sodom, King Birsha of Gomorrah, King Shinab of Admah, King Shemeber of Zeboiim, along with the king of Bela (which was also known as Zoar).

2 they [invaded the Jordan Valley near the Dead Sea, and] made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (a)(that is, Zoar).

3 All these (b)came as allies to (F)the valley of Siddim (that is, (G)the Salt Sea).

3 All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.

3 All of these came as allies to the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea(E)).

3 All of this latter group of kings allied together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).

3 All of these [kings] joined together [as allies] in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Sea of Salt).

4 Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but the thirteenth year they rebelled.

4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

4 They were subject to Chedorlaomer for 12 years, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

4 They were subject to Chedorlaomer for twelve years, but they rebelled in the thirteenth year.

4 Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer [the most powerful king in the invading confederacy], but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, came and (c)defeated the (H)Rephaim in (I)Ashteroth-karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham and the Emim in (d)(J)Shaveh-kiriathaim,

5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,

5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim(F) in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham,(G) the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim,

5 In the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer and the kings with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-kiriathaim,

5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the [three] kings who were with him attacked and subdued the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim,

6 and the (K)Horites in their Mount Seir, as far as (L)El-paran, which is by the wilderness.

6 And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.

6 and the Horites(H) in the mountains of Seir, as far as El-paran(I) by the wilderness.

6 and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, near El-paran by the desert.

6 and the Horites in their mountainous country of Seir, as far as El-paran, which is on the border of the wilderness.

7 Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, (M)Kadesh), and (e)conquered all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, who lived in (N)Hazazon-tamar.

7 And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.

7 Then they came back to invade En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh(J)), and they defeated all the territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.(K)

7 Next they turned back and came to En-mishpat (which was also known as Kadesh) and conquered all the territory of the Amalekites, along with the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.

7 Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and subdued all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.

8 And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah and the king of Admah and the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) came out; and they arrayed for battle against them in (O)the valley of Siddim,

8 And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;

8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and lined up for battle in the Valley of Siddim

8 Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (which was also known as Zoar) prepared for battle in the Valley of Siddim

8 Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (that is, Zoar) came out; and they joined together for battle with the invading kings in the Valley of Siddim,

9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of (f)Goiim and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.

9 With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.

9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.

9 against King Chedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Shinar, and King Arioch of Ellasar four kings against five.

9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goiim and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.

10 Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and (P)the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell (g)into them. But those who survived fled to the (Q)hill country.

10 And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.

10 Now the Valley of Siddim contained many asphalt pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into them,(d) but the rest fled to the mountains.(L)

10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, so when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of their people fell into them, while the rest fled to the hill country.

10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar (bitumen) pits; and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, they fell into them. But the remainder [of the kings] who survived fled to the hill country.

11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply, and departed.

11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.

11 The four kings took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food and went on.

11 The conquerors captured all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, including their entire food supply, and then left.

12 They also took Lot, (R)Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and departed, (S)for he was living in Sodom.

12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

12 They also took Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, for he was living in Sodom,(M) and they went on.

12 They also took Abram's nephew Lot captive, and confiscated his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

12 And they also took [captive] Lot, Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and left, for he was living in Sodom.

13 Then (h)a fugitive came and told Abram the (T)Hebrew. Now he was (i)living by the (j)(U)oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner, and these were (k)(V)allies with Abram.

13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.

13 One of the survivors came and told Abram the Hebrew,(N) who lived near the oaks belonging to Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol and the brother of Aner. They were bound by a treaty with(e) Abram.

13 Someone escaped, arrived, and reported what had happened to Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks belonging to Mamre the Amorite, whose brothers Eshcol and Aner were allied with Abram.

13 Then a survivor who had escaped [from the invading forces on the other side of the Jordan] came and told Abram the (b)Hebrew. Now he was living by the terebinths (oaks) of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner—they were allies of Abram.

14 When Abram heard that (W)his (l)relative had been taken captive, he (m)led out his trained men, (X)born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far as (Y)Dan.

14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

14 When Abram heard that his relative had been taken prisoner, he assembled(f) his 318 trained men, born in his household,(O) and they went in pursuit as far as Dan.(P)

14 When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken prisoner, he gathered together 318 of his trained men, who had been born in his household, and they went out in pursuit as far as Dan.

14 When Abram heard that his nephew [Lot] had been captured, he armed and led out his trained men, born in his own house, [numbering] three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far [north] as Dan.

15 (Z)He divided (n)his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and (o)defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is (p)north of (AA)Damascus.

15 And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

15 And he and his servants deployed against them by night, attacked them, and pursued them as far as Hobah to the north of Damascus.

15 During the night, Abram and his servants divided his forces, conquered his enemies, and pursued them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

16 He (AB)brought back all the goods, and also brought back (AC)his (q)relative Lot with his possessions, and also the women, and the people.

Melchizedek's Blessing

17 Then after his return from the (r)defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, (AD)the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, (AE)the King’s Valley).

17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.

17 After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley(Q)).

17 After Abram's return from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with them, the king of Sodom went out to meet with him in the Shaveh Valley (that is, the King's Valley).

17 Then after Abram’s return from the defeat (slaughter) of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

18 And (AF)Melchizedek king of Salem brought out (AG)bread and wine; now he was a (AH)priest of (s)God Most High.

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

18 Then Melchizedek, king of Salem,(g)(R) brought out bread and wine; he was a priest to God Most High.(S)

18 King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine, since he was serving as the priest of God Most High.

18 (c)Melchizedek king of Salem (ancient Jerusalem) brought out bread and wine [for them]; he was the priest of (d)God Most High.

19 He blessed him and said,“Blessed be Abram of (t)God Most High,(u)(AI)Possessor of heaven and earth;

19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

19 He blessed him and said:Abram is blessed by God Most High,Creator(h) of heaven and earth,

19 Melchizedek blessed Abram and said, "Abram is blessed by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

19 And Melchizedek blessed Abram and said,“Blessed (joyful, favored) be Abram by God Most High,Creator and Possessor of heaven and earth;

20 And blessed be (v)God Most High,Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”(AJ)He gave him a tenth of all.

20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

20 and I give praise to(i) God Most Highwho has handed over your enemies to you.And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.(T)

20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your control." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

20 And blessed, praised, and glorified be God Most High,Who has given your enemies into your hand.”And Abram gave him a tenth of all [the treasure he had taken in battle].(A)

21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give the (w)people to me and take the goods for yourself.”

21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the possessions for yourself.”

21 The king of Sodom told Abram, "Return the people to me, and you take the possessions for yourself."

21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods (spoils of battle) for yourself.”

22 Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have (x)sworn to the Lord (y)(AK)God Most High, (z)(AL)possessor of heaven and earth,

22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,

22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand in an oath to Yahweh, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

22 But Abram answered the king of Sodom, "I have made an oath to the LORD God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand and sworn an oath to the Lord God Most High, the Creator and Possessor of heaven and earth,

23 that (AM)I will not take a thread or a sandal thong or anything that is yours, for fear you would say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’

23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

23 that I will not take a thread or sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you can never say, ‘I made Abram rich.’

23 that I will not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you won't be able to say, "I made Abram rich.'

23 that I would not take anything that is yours, from a thread to a sandal strap, so you could not say, ‘I [the King of Sodom] have made Abram rich.’

24 (aa)I will take nothing except what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, (AN)Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share.”

24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

24 I will take nothing(j) except what the servants have eaten. But as for the share of the men who came with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre—they can take their share.”

24 I will take nothing except what my warriors have eaten. But as for what belongs to the men who were allied with me, including Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, let them take their share."

24 I will take nothing except what my young men have eaten, and the share of the spoils belonging to the men [my allies] who went with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share of the spoils.”
