1 Now the man (a)had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to (b)Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a (c)manchild with the help of the Lord.”
1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
1 Adam was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have had a male child with the Lord’s help.”(a)
1 Later, Adam had sexual relations with his wife Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have given birth to a male child the LORD."
2 Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And (A)Abel was (B)a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
2 Then she also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground.
2 And she did it again, giving birth to his brother Abel. Abel shepherded flocks and Cain became a farmer.
2 And [later] she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept the flocks [of sheep and goats], but Cain cultivated the ground.
3 So it came about (d)in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
3 Later, after a while, Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit that he had harvested,
3 And in the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground.
4 (C)Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And (D)the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering;
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
4 And Abel also presented an offering—some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions.(B) The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,(C)
4 while Abel brought the best parts of some of the firstborn from his flock. The LORD looked favorably upon Abel and his offering,
5 but (E)for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So (F)Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
5 but He did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent.(b)
5 but he did not look favorably upon Cain and his offering.
7 (H)If you do well, (e)will not your countenance be lifted up? (I)And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, (J)but you must master it.”
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
7 If you do what is right, won’t you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”(E)
7 If you do what is appropriate, you'll be accepted, won't you? But if you don't do what is appropriate, sin is crouching near your doorway, turning toward you. Now as for you, will you take dominion over it?"
7 If you do well [believing Me and doing what is acceptable and pleasing to Me], will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well [but ignore My instruction], sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you [to overpower you], but you must master it.”
8 Cain (f)told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and (K)killed him.
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
8 Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”(d) And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.(F)
8 Instead, Cain told his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the wilderness." When they were outside in the fields, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “(L)Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s guardian?”
9 Later, the LORD asked Cain, "Where's your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he answered. "Am I my brother's guardian?"
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he [lied and] said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
11 Now (N)you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
11 So now you are cursed, alienated, from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood you have shed.(e)
11 Now you're more cursed than the ground, which has opened to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
12 (O)When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; (P)you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth.”
12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
12 If you work the ground, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”(H)
12 Whenever you work the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you, and you'll wander throughout the earth as a fugitive."
12 When you cultivate the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength [it will resist producing good crops] for you; you shall be a fugitive and a vagabond [roaming aimlessly] on the earth [in perpetual exile without a home, a degraded outcast].”
14 Behold, You have (Q)driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and (R)I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and (S)whoever finds me will kill me.”
14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
14 Since You are banishing me today from the soil, and I must hide myself from Your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me.”(I)
14 "You're driving me from the soil today. I'll be hidden from you, and I'll wander throughout the earth as a fugitive. In the future, whoever finds me will kill me."
14 Behold, You have driven me out this day from the face of the land; and from Your face (presence) I will be hidden, and I will be a fugitive and an [aimless] vagabond on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 So the Lord said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him (T)sevenfold.” And the Lord (g)(U)appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.
15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
15 Then the Lord replied to him, “In that case,(g) whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.”(h) And He placed a mark(J) on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him.
15 The LORD told him, "This won't happen, because whoever kills you will suffer seven times the vengeance." Then the LORD placed a sign on Cain so that no one finding him would kill him.
16 Then Cain went out from the presence (V)of the Lord, and (h)settled in the land of (i)Nod, east of Eden.
16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
16 Then Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
16 After this, Cain left the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
16 So Cain went away from the [manifested] presence of the Lord, and lived in the land of Nod [wandering in exile], east of Eden.
17 Cain (j)had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son.
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
17 Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son.
17 Later, Cain had sexual relations with his wife. She became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain founded a city and named it after his son Enoch.
18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad (k)became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael (l)became the father of Methushael, and Methushael (m)became the father of Lamech.
18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
18 Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
18 Irad was born to Enoch. Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech.
19 Lamech took to himself (W)two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah.
19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
19 Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah.
19 Later, Lamech married two wives. One was named Adah and the other was named Zillah.
19 And Lamech took for himself two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal, who became the ancestor of those who live in tents and herd livestock.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he became the father of those [nomadic herdsmen] who live in tents and have cattle and raise livestock.
21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.
21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
21 His brother was named Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and the flute.
21 His brother was named Jubal; he became the ancestor of all those who play the lyre and the flute.
21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he became the father of all those [musicians] who play the lyre and flute.
22 As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.
22 Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. Tubal-cain’s sister was Naamah.
22 Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, who became a forger of bronze and iron work. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah.
22 Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, the smith (craftsman) and teacher of every artisan in instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives,“Adah and Zillah,Listen to my voice,You wives of Lamech,Give heed to my speech,(X)For I (n)have killed a man for wounding me;And a boy for striking me;
23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
23 Lamech said to his wives:Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words.For I killed a man for wounding me,a young man for striking me.
23 Lamech told his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to what I have to say: You wives of Lamech, hear what I'm announcing! I've killed a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.
23 Lamech said to his wives,“Adah and Zillah,Hear my voice;You wives of Lamech,Listen to what I say;For I have killed a man [merely] for wounding me,And a boy [only] for striking (bruising) me.
25 (Z)Adam (o)had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him (p)Seth, for, she said, “God (q)has appointed me another (r)offspring in place of Abel, (AA)for Cain killed him.”
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
25 Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for she said, “God has given(j) me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
25 Later on, after Adam had sexual relations with his wife, she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, because "God granted me another offspring to replace Abel, since Cain murdered him."
25 Adam knew [Eve as] his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for [she said], “God has granted another child for me in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.”
26 To Seth, to him also (AB)a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began (AC)to call (s)upon the name of the Lord.
26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
26 A son was born to Seth(K) also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of Yahweh.(L)
26 Seth also fathered a son, whom he named Enosh. At that time, profaning the name of the LORD began.
