Jacob's Burial

1 Then Joseph embraced his father, cried over him, and kissed him.

1 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him.

1 And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

1 Then Joseph, leaning over his father’s face, wept and kissed him.

1 Then Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him [tenderly].

2 After this, he issued orders to his physician servants to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel.

2 Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians (A)embalmed Israel.

2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

2 He commanded his servants who were physicians to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel.

2 Then Joseph ordered his servants the physicians to embalm (mummify) his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel (Jacob).

3 It took 40 days to complete the process, the normal period required for embalming. Meanwhile, the Egyptians mourned for him for 70 days.

3 Now forty days were (a)required for (b)it, for (c)such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians (B)wept for him seventy days.

3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.

3 They took 40 days to complete this, for embalming takes that long, and the Egyptians mourned for him 70 days.(A)

3 Now forty days were required for this, for that is the customary number of days [of preparation] required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept and grieved for him [in public mourning as they would for royalty] for seventy days.

4 At the conclusion of the mourning period, Joseph addressed Pharaoh's household. "If you're satisfied with me, would you please take this message to Pharaoh for me? Tell him,

4 When the days of (d)mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak (e)to Pharaoh, saying,

4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

4 When the days of mourning were over, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s household, “If I have found favor with you, please tell(a) Pharaoh that

4 When the days of weeping and public mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to [the nobles of] the house of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying,

5 "My father told me, "Look! I'm about to die. Bury me in my grave that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." So please let me travel to bury my father. I'll be right back.'"

5 (C)My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave (D)which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’”

5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.

5 my father made me take an oath,(B) saying, ‘I am about to die. You must bury me there in the tomb that I made for myself in the land of Canaan.’(C) Now let me go and bury my father. Then I will return.”

5 ‘My father made me swear [an oath], saying, “Hear me, I am about to die; bury me in my tomb which I prepared for myself in the land of Canaan.” So now let me go up [to Canaan], please, and bury my father; then I will return.’”

6 "Please go," Pharaoh replied. "Bury your father, as he asked you to do."

6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

6 So Pharaoh said, “Go and bury your father in keeping with your oath.”

6 And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

7 So Joseph got up and went to bury his father, accompanied by all of Pharaoh's servants, all of the elders of Egypt,

7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

7 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

7 Then Joseph went to bury his father, and all Pharaoh’s servants, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt went with him,

7 So Joseph went up [to Canaan] to bury his father, and with him went all the officials of Pharaoh, [the nobles of his court and] the elders of his household and all [the nobles and] the elders of the land of Egypt—

8 all of Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household. They left behind in the territory of Goshen only their youngest children, their flocks, and their herds.

8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen.

8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

8 along with all Joseph’s household, his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children, their sheep, and their cattle were left in the land of Goshen.

8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household. They left only their little ones and their flocks and herds in the land of Goshen.

9 Chariots and horsemen also accompanied Joseph, so there were a lot of people.

9 There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company.

9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.

9 Horses and chariots went up with him; it was a very impressive procession.

9 Both chariots and horsemen also went up [to Canaan] with Joseph; and it was a very great company.

10 When they arrived at Atad's threshing floor, which is located beyond the Jordan River, they held a great and mournful memorial service, during which Joseph spent seven days mourning for his father.

10 When they came to the (f)threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they (E)lamented there with a very great and (g)sorrowful lamentation; and he (h)observed seven days mourning for his father.

10 And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

10 When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, they lamented and wept loudly, and Joseph mourned seven days for his father.

10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they mourned there with a great lamentation (expressions of mourning for the deceased) and [extreme demonstrations of] sorrow [according to Egyptian custom]; and Joseph observed a seven-day mourning for his father.

11 As soon as the Canaanites who lived in the land observed the mourning going on at Atad's threshing floor, they commented "This is a significant time of mourning for the Egyptians." That's why the place, which is located beyond the Jordan River, became known as Abel-mizraim.

11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at (i)the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a (j)grievous (k)mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named (l)Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan.

11 When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a solemn mourning on the part of the Egyptians.” Therefore the place is named Abel-mizraim.(b) It is across the Jordan.

11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim (mourning of Egypt); it is west of the Jordan.

12 And so Israel's sons did what he had instructed them to do:

12 Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them;

12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

12 So Jacob’s sons did for him what he had commanded them.

12 So Jacob’s sons did for him as he had commanded them;

13 they carried him to the territory of Canaan and buried him in the cave in Machpelah field near Mamre that Abraham had purchased as a cemetery from Ephron the Hittite.

13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in (F)the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a (m)burial site from Ephron the Hittite.

13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave at Machpelah in the field near Mamre, which Abraham had purchased as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite.(D)

13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite.

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

14 After he had buried his father, Joseph and his brothers returned to Egypt, along with everyone who had gone with him to attend the burial.

14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

14 After Joseph buried his father, he returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone with him to bury his father.

14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him.

Joseph's Kindness

15 Later, after Joseph's brothers faced the reality of their father's death, they asked themselves, "What happens if Joseph decides to hold a grudge against us? What if he pays us back in full for all the wrong things we did to him?"

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “(G)What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!”

15 And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said to one another, “If Joseph is holding a grudge against us, he will certainly repay us for all the suffering we caused him.”(E)

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph carries a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him?”

16 So they sent this message to Joseph:

16 So they (n)sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father charged before he died, saying,

16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

16 So they sent this message to Joseph, “Before he died your father gave a command:

16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded us before he died, saying,

17 "Before he died, your father left some instructions. He told us, "Tell Joseph, "Please forgive your brothers' offenses. I beg you, forgive their sins, because they wronged you."' So please forgive the transgression of the servants of your father's God."

17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph, “Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

17 ‘Say this to Joseph: Please forgive your brothers’ transgression and their sin—the suffering they caused you.’ Therefore, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept(F) when their message came to him.

17 ‘You are to say to Joseph, “I beg you, please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ Now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 Joseph wept when they talked to him. So Joseph's brothers went to visit him, fell prostrate in front of him, and declared, "Look! We're your servants."

18 Then his brothers also came and (H)fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

18 Then his brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, “We are your slaves!”

18 Then his brothers went and fell down before him [in confession]; then they said, “Behold, we are your servants (slaves).”

19 "Don't be afraid," Joseph responded. "Am I sitting in God's place?

19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place?

19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?(G)

19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? [Vengeance is His, not mine.]

20 As far as you're concerned, you were planning evil against me, but God intended it for good, planning to bring about the present result so that many people would be preserved alive.

20 As for you, (I)you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about (o)this present result, to preserve many people alive.

20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

20 You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result—the survival of many people.(H)

20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present outcome, that many people would be kept alive [as they are this day].

21 So don't be afraid! I'll take care of you and your little ones." So Joseph kept on comforting them, speaking to the needs of their hearts.

21 So therefore, do not be afraid; (J)I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke (p)kindly to them.

21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

21 Therefore don’t be afraid. I will take care of you and your little ones.”(I) And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.(c)

21 So now, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and support you and your little ones.” So he comforted them [giving them encouragement and hope] and spoke [with kindness] to their hearts.

The Death Of Joseph

22 Joseph continued to live in Egypt, along with his father's household, until he was 110 years old.

22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.

22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.

22 Joseph and his father’s household remained in Egypt. Joseph lived 110 years.

22 Now Joseph lived in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.

23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's children, as well as the children who had been born to Manasseh's son Machir, whom he adopted as his own.

23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were (K)born on Joseph’s knees.

23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees.

23 He saw Ephraim’s sons to the third generation;(J) the sons of Manasseh’s son Machir were recognized by(d)(e) Joseph.(K)

23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children; also the children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born and raised on Joseph’s knees.

24 Later, Joseph told his brothers, "I'm going to die soon, but God will certainly provide for you and bring you up from this land to the land that he promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

24 Joseph said to his brothers, “(L)I am about to die, but God will surely (q)take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He (r)promised on oath to (M)Abraham, to (N)Isaac and to (O)Jacob.”

24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die,(L) but God will certainly come to your aid and bring you up from this land to the land He promised Abraham,(M) Isaac,(N) and Jacob.”(O)

24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up out of this land to the land which He promised to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob [to give you].”

25 So Joseph made all of Israel's other children make this promise: "Because God is certainly going to take care of you, you are to carry my bones up from here."

25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely (s)take care of you, and (P)you shall carry my bones up from here.”

25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

25 So Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath: “When God comes to your aid, you are to carry my bones up from here.”(P)

25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel (Jacob) swear [an oath], saying, “God will surely visit you and take care of you [returning you to Canaan], and [when that happens] you shall carry my bones up from here.”

26 Some time later, Joseph died at the age of 110 years, and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

26 So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and (t)he was (Q)embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

26 So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

26 Joseph died at the age of 110. They embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.

26 So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him and he was put (a)in a coffin in Egypt.
