Christ's One Sacrifice For Sin

1 For the Law, since it has only (A)a shadow of (B)the good things to come and not the very (a)form of things, (b)can (C)never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, (D)make perfect those who draw near.

1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

1 Since the law has only a shadow of the good things(A) to come, and not the actual form of those realities, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.

1 For the Law, being only a reflection of the blessings to come and not their substance, can never make perfect those who come near by the same sacrifices repeatedly offered year after year.

1 For since the Law has only a shadow [just a pale representation] of the good things to come—not the very image of those things—it can never, by offering the same sacrifices continually year after year, make (a)perfect those who approach [its altars].

2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had (E)consciousness of sins?

2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

2 Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, once purified, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?

2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped offering them, because the worshipers, cleansed once for all, would no longer be aware of any sins?

2 For if it were otherwise, would not these sacrifices have stopped being offered? For the worshipers, having once [for all time] been cleansed, would no longer have a consciousness of sin.

3 But (F)in (c)those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year.

3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

3 But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

3 Instead, through those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year,

3 But [as it is] these [continual] sacrifices bring a fresh reminder of sins [to be atoned for] year after year,

4 For it is (G)impossible for the (H)blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

4 for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

4 for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5 Therefore, (I)when He comes into the world, He says,(J)Sacrifice and offering You have not desired,But (K)a body You have prepared for Me;

5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

5 Therefore, as He was coming into the world, He said:You did not want sacrifice and offering,but You prepared a body for Me.

5 For this reason, the Scriptures say, when the Messiah was about to come into the world: "You did not want sacrifices and offerings, but you prepared a body for me.

5 Therefore, when Christ enters into the world, He says,Sacrifice and offering You have not desired,But [instead] You have prepared a body for Me [to offer];

6 (L)In whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure.

6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

6 You did not delightin whole burnt offerings and sin offerings.

6 In burnt offerings and sin offerings you never took delight.

6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no delight.

7 (M)Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come(In (N)the scroll of the book it is written of Me)To do Your will, O God.’”

7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

7 Then I said, “See—it is written about Mein the volume of the scroll—I have come to do Your will, God!”(B)(a)

7 Then I said, "See, I have come to do your will, O God' In the volume of the scroll this is written about me."

7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have comeTo do Your will, O God[To fulfill] what is written of Me in the scroll of the book.’”(A)

8 After saying above, “(O)Sacrifices and offerings and (P)whole burnt offerings and sacrifices (Q)for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law),

8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

8 After He says above, You did not want or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law(C)),

8 In this passage he says, "You never wanted or took delight in sacrifices, offerings, burnt offerings, and sin offerings," which are offered according to the Law.

8 After saying [in the citation] above, “You have neither desired, nor have You taken delight in sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin” (which are offered according to the Law)

9 then He (d)said, “(R)Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second.

9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

9 He then says, See, I have come to do Your will.(b) He takes away the first to establish the second.

9 Then he says, "See, I have come to do your will." He takes away the first in order to establish the second.

9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will.” [And so] He does away with the first [covenant as a means of atoning for sin based on animal sacrifices] so that He may inaugurate and establish the second [covenant by means of obedience].(B)

10 By (e)this will we have been (S)sanctified through (T)the offering of (U)the body of Jesus Christ (V)once for all.

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

10 By this will of God, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all.(D)

10 By God's will we have been sanctified once and for all through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus, the Messiah.

10 And in accordance with this will [of God] we [who believe in the message of salvation] have been sanctified [that is, set apart as holy for God and His purposes] through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) once for all.

11 Every priest stands daily ministering and (W)offering time after time the same sacrifices, which (X)can never take away sins;

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

11 Every priest stands day after day ministering and offering the same sacrifices time after time, which can never take away sins.(E)

11 Day after day every priest stands and repeatedly offers the same sacrifices that can never take away sins.

11 Every priest stands [at his altar of service] ministering daily, offering the same sacrifices over and over, which are never able (b)to strip away sins [that envelop and cover us];

12 but He, having offered one sacrifice (Y)for (f)sins (Z)for all time, (AA)sat down at the right hand of God,

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

12 But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.(F)

12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God."

12 whereas Christ, having offered the one sacrifice [the all-sufficient sacrifice of Himself] for sins for all time, sat down [signifying the completion of atonement for sin] at the right hand of God [the position of honor],

13 waiting from that time onward (AB)until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.

13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

13 He is now waiting until His enemies are made His footstool.(G)

13 Since that time, he has been waiting for his enemies to be made a footstool for his feet.

13 waiting from that time onward until his enemies are made a footstool for His feet.(C)

14 For by one offering He has (AC)perfected (AD)for all time those who are (g)sanctified.

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified.

14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

14 For by the one offering He has perfected forever and completely cleansed those who are being sanctified [bringing each believer to spiritual completion and maturity].

15 And (AE)the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. For after He says:

15 The Holy Spirit also assures us of this, for he said:

15 And the Holy Spirit also adds His testimony to us [in confirmation of this]; for after having said,

16 (AF)This is the covenant that I will make with themAfter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws upon their heart,And on their mind I will write them,”He then says,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

16 This is the covenant I will make with themafter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws on their heartsand write them on their minds,

16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts and will write them on their minds,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with themAfter those days, says the Lord:I will imprint My laws upon their heart,And on their mind I will inscribe them [producing an inward change],”He then says,

17 (AG)And their sins and their lawless deedsI will remember no more.”

17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

17 He adds:I will never again remembertheir sins and their lawless acts.(H)(c)

17 and I will never again remember their sins and their lawless deeds."

17 And their sins and their lawless actsI will remember no more [no longer holding their sins against them].”(D)

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these sins, there is no longer any offering for sin.

18 Now where there is [absolute] forgiveness and complete cancellation of the penalty of these things, there is no longer any offering [to be made to atone] for sin.

Hold Fast The Confession Of Our Hope

19 Therefore, brethren, since we (AH)have confidence to (AI)enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

19 Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus,(I)

19 Therefore, my brothers, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,

19 Therefore, (c)believers, since we have confidence and full freedom to enter the Holy Place [the place where God dwells] by [means of] the blood of Jesus,

20 by (AJ)a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through (AK)the veil, that is, His flesh,

20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

20 by a new and living way He has opened for us through the curtain (that is, His flesh(J)),

20 the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh),

20 by this new and living way which He initiated and opened for us through the veil [as in the Holy of Holies], that is, through His flesh,

21 and since we have (AL)a great priest (AM)over the house of God,

21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

21 and since we have a great high priest over the house of God,(K)

21 and since we have a great high priest over the household of God,

21 and since we have a great and wonderful Priest [Who rules] over the house of God,

22 let us (AN)draw near with a (h)sincere heart in (AO)full assurance of faith, having our hearts (AP)sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies (AQ)washed with pure water.

22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.(L)

22 let us continue to come near with sincere hearts in the full assurance that faith provides, because our hearts have been sprinkled clean from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

22 let us approach [God] with a true and sincere heart in unqualified assurance of faith, having had our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

23 Let us hold fast the (AR)confession of our (AS)hope without wavering, for (AT)He who promised is faithful;

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.(M)

23 Let us continue to hold firmly to the hope that we confess without wavering, for the one who made the promise is faithful.

23 Let us seize and hold tightly the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful [to His word];

Encourage Each Other

24 and let us consider how (AU)to stimulate one another to love and (AV)good deeds,

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

24 And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works,

24 And let us continue to consider how to motivate one another to love and good deeds,

24 and let us consider [thoughtfully] how we may encourage one another to love and to do good deeds,

25 not forsaking our own (AW)assembling together, as is the habit of some, but (AX)encouraging one another; and all the more as you see (AY)the day drawing near.

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

25 not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other,(N) and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another even more as you see the day of the Lord coming nearer.

25 not forsaking our meeting together [as believers for worship and instruction], as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more [faithfully] as you see the day [of Christ’s return] approaching.

A Serious Warning Against Continuing Deliberate Sin

26 For if we go on (AZ)sinning willfully after receiving (BA)the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

26 For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,(O)

26 For if we choose to go on sinning after we have learned the full truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

26 For if we go on willfully and deliberately sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice [to atone] for our sins [that is, no further offering to anticipate],

27 but a terrifying expectation of (BB)judgment and (BC)the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.

27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.(P)

27 but only a terrifying prospect of judgment and a raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

27 but a kind of awful and terrifying expectation of [divine] judgment and the fury of a fire and burning wrath which will consume the adversaries [those who put themselves in opposition to God].(E)

28 (BD)Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

28 If anyone disregards Moses’ law, he dies without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(Q)

28 Anyone who violates the Law of Moses dies without mercy "on the testimony of two or three witnesses."

28 Anyone who has ignored and set aside the Law of Moses is put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(F)

29 (BE)How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve (BF)who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean (BG)the blood of the covenant (BH)by which he was sanctified, and has (BI)insulted the Spirit of grace?

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

29 How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, regarded as profane(d) the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and insulted the Spirit of grace?(R)

29 How much more severe a punishment do you think that person deserves who tramples on God's Son, treats as common the blood of the covenant by which it was sanctified, and insults the Spirit of grace?

29 How much greater punishment do you think he will deserve who has rejected and trampled under foot the Son of God, and has considered unclean and common the blood of the covenant that (d)sanctified him, and has insulted the Spirit of grace [who imparts the unmerited favor and blessing of God]?(G)

30 For we know Him who said, “(BJ)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “(BK)The Lord will judge His people.”

30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

30 For we know the One who has said, Vengeance belongs to Me, I will repay,(e)(f) and again, The Lord will judge His people.(S)(g)

30 For we know the one who said, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will pay them back," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."

30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine [retribution and the deliverance of justice rest with Me], I will repay [the wrongdoer].” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”(H)

31 It is a (BL)terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the (BM)living God.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!(T)

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!

31 It is a fearful and terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God [incurring His judgment and wrath].

32 But remember (BN)the former days, (i)when, after being (BO)enlightened, you endured a great (BP)conflict of sufferings,

32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.(U)

32 But you must continue to remember those earlier days, how after you were enlightened you endured a hard and painful struggle.

32 But remember the earlier days, when, after being [spiritually] enlightened, you [patiently] endured a great conflict of sufferings,

33 partly by being (BQ)made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming (BR)sharers with those who were so treated.

33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way.(V)

33 At times you were made a public spectacle by means of insults and persecutions, while at other times you associated with people who were treated this way.

33 sometimes by being made a spectacle, publicly exposed to insults and distress, and sometimes by becoming companions with those who were so treated.

34 For you (BS)showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted (BT)joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves (BU)a better possession and a lasting one.

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

34 For you sympathized with the prisoners(h) and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, knowing that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.(i)(W)

34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and cheerfully submitted to the violent seizure of your property, because you know that you have a better and more permanent possession.

34 For you showed sympathy and deep concern for those who were imprisoned, and you joyfully accepted the [unjust] seizure of your belongings and the confiscation of your property, conscious of the fact that you have a better possession and a lasting one [prepared for you in heaven].

35 Therefore, do not throw away your (BV)confidence, which has a great (BW)reward.

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

35 So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.(X)

35 So don't lose your confidence, since it holds a great reward for you.

35 Do not, therefore, fling away your [fearless] confidence, for it has a glorious and great reward.

36 For you have need of (BX)endurance, so that when you have (BY)done the will of God, you may (BZ)receive (j)what was promised.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised.(Y)

36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God's will you can receive what he has promised.

36 For you have need of patient endurance [to bear up under difficult circumstances without compromising], so that when you have carried out the will of God, you may receive and enjoy to the full what is promised.

37 (CA)For yet in a very little while,(CB)He who is coming will come, and will not delay.

37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.

37 For yet in a very little while,the Coming One will come and not delay.

37 For "in a very little while the one who is coming will return he will not delay;

37 For yet in a very little while,He who is coming will come, and will not delay.

38 (CC)But My righteous one shall live by faith;And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.

38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

38 But My righteous one(j) will live by faith;and if he draws back,I have no pleasure in him.(Z)(k)

38 but my righteous one will live by faith, and if he turns back, my soul will take no pleasure in him."

38 But My righteous one [the one justified by faith] shall live by faith [respecting man’s relationship to God and trusting Him];And if he draws back [shrinking in fear], My soul has no delight in him.(I)

39 But (k)we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the (l)preserving of the soul.

39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

39 But we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and obtain life.

39 Now, we do not belong to those who turn back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

39 But (e)our way is not that of those who shrink back to destruction, but [we are] of those who believe [relying on God through faith in Jesus Christ, the Messiah] and by this confident faith preserve the soul.
