By faith Abraham offered up Isaac, when he was tempted, and he offered him being his only begotten son, which had received the promises:

After these deeds, God did prove Abraham and said unto him, "Abraham." And he answered, "Here am I."

saying, "By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, because thou hast done this thing and hast not spared thy only son,

And think on all the ways which the LORD thy God led thee this forty years in the wilderness, for to humble thee and to prove thee, to wete what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments or no.

But when the ambassadors of the lords of Babylon were sent to him to enquire of the wonder that chanced in the land, God left him: to tempt him, that all that was in his heart might be known.

But lay thine hand upon him a little, touch once all that he hath, and, I hold, he shall curse thee to thy face."

Then said the LORD unto Satan, "Hast thou not considered my servant Job, how that he is an innocent and virtuous man such one as feareth God, and escheweth evil, and that there is none like him in the land? But thou movedst me against him, to punish him: yet is it in vain, for he continueth still in his godliness."

Like as silver is tried in the fire and gold in the furnace, even so doth the LORD prove the hearts.

Yea, some of those which have understanding shall be persecuted also: that they may be tried, purified, and cleansed, till the time be out. For there is yet another time appointed.

And the same third part will I bring through the fire, and will cleanse them, as the silver is cleansed: Yea and try them, like as gold is tried. Then shall they call upon my name, and I will hear them: I will say, 'It is my people.' And they shall say, 'LORD, my God.'"

Who shall endure in the day of his coming, or who shall stand to behold him? For he is as trying fire, and as the herb that fullers scour withal.

For God so loveth the world, that he hath given his only son, for the intent that none that believe in him should perish: But should have everlasting life.

For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

But he whose kindred is not counted among them, received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.

My brethren, count it exceeding joy when ye fall into divers temptations,

Was not Abraham our father justified through works when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have known what end the Lord made. For the Lord is very pitiful, and merciful.

in the which time ye shall rejoice, though now for a season - if need require - ye are in heaviness, through manifold temptations,

Dearly beloved, be not troubled in this heat, which now is come among you to try you, as though some strange thing had happened unto you:

Because thou hast kept the words of my patience, therefore I will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which will come upon all the world, to tempt them that dwell upon the earth.
