"If I have made gold my trust or called fine gold my confidence,

those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?

"See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and sought refuge in his own destruction!"

Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

Those who buy them slaughter them and go unpunished, and those who sell them say, 'Blessed be the LORD, I have become rich,' and their own shepherds have no pity on them.

And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.'

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."

For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

Therefore he sacrifices to his net and makes offerings to his dragnet; for by them he lives in luxury, and his food is rich.

"Moreover, wine is a traitor, an arrogant man who is never at rest. His greed is as wide as Sheol; like death he has never enough. He gathers for himself all nations and collects as his own all peoples."
