1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning (A)Judah and Jerusalem, which he saw during the (a)reigns of (B)Uzziah, (C)Jotham, (D)Ahaz and (E)Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

1 This is the vision that Amoz's son Isaiah had about Judah and Jerusalem during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

Rebellious Judah

2 Hear, heavens, and listen, earth; for the LORD has spoken: I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.

2 (F)Listen, O heavens, and hear, O (G)earth;For the Lord speaks,(H)Sons I have reared and brought up,But they have (I)revolted against Me.

2 Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth,(H)for the Lord has spoken:“I have raised children(c) and brought them up,but they have rebelled against Me.(I)

2 Listen, you heavens, and let the earth pay attention, because the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them to adulthood, but then they rebelled against me.

3 The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib; but Israel doesn't know, my people do not consider.

3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

3 “An ox knows its owner,And a donkey its master’s manger,But Israel (J)does not know,My people (K)do not understand.”

4 Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children who deal corruptly. They have forsaken the LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged and backward.

4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

4 Alas, sinful nation,People weighed down with iniquity,(b)(L)Offspring of evildoers,Sons who (M)act corruptly!They have (N)abandoned the Lord,They have (O)despised the Holy One of Israel,They have turned away (c)from Him.

4 Oh sinful nation,people weighed down with iniquity,(K)brood of evildoers,(L)depraved children!(d)They have abandoned(M) the Lord;they have despised(N) the Holy One of Israel;(O)they have turned their backs on Him.

4 "Oh, you sinful nation! You people burdened down by iniquity! You offspring of those who keep practicing what is evil! You corrupt children! "They've abandoned the LORD; they've despised the Holy One of Israel; in their estrangement, they've walked away from me.

5 Why should you be beaten more, that you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

5 Where will you be stricken again,As you (P)continue in your rebellion?The whole head is (Q)sickAnd the whole heart is faint.

5 Why do you want more beatings?Why do you keep on rebelling?The whole head is hurt,and the whole heart is sick.

5 "Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? Your whole head is sick, and your whole heart is faint.

6 From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven't been closed, neither bandaged, neither soothed with oil.

6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head, there's no soundness evident only bruises, sores, and festering wounds that haven't been cleaned out, bandaged, or treated with oil."

7 Your country is desolate. Your cities are burned with fire. Strangers devour your land in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

7 "Your country lies desolate; your cities have been incinerated. Before your very eyes, foreigners are devouring your land they've brought devastation on it, while the land is overthrown by foreigners.

8 The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a besieged city.

8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

8 "The daughter of Zion is left abandoned, like a booth in a vineyard, like a hut in a cucumber field, or like a city under siege.

9 Unless the LORD of hosts had left to us a very small remnant, we would have been as Sodom; we would have been like Gomorrah.

9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

9 (V)Unless the Lord of hostsHad left us a few (W)survivors,We would be like (X)Sodom,We would be like Gomorrah.

9 If the Lord of Hosts(T)had not left us a few survivors,(U)we would be like Sodom,we would resemble Gomorrah.(V)

9 If the Lord of the Heavenly Armies hadn't left us a few survivors, we would be like Sodom; we would be like Gomorrah.

Israel's Corrupt Religion

10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom. Listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah.

10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.

10 "Listen to what the LORD says, you rulers of Sodom, and pay attention to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah!

11 "What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?," says the LORD. "I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed animals. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of male goats.

11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

11 (AA)What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?”Says the Lord.“I (d)have had enough of burnt offerings of ramsAnd the fat of fed cattle;And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats.

11 “What are all your sacrifices to Me?”asks the Lord.“I have had enough of burnt offerings and ramsand the fat of well-fed cattle;I have no desire for the blood of bulls,lambs, or male goats.(Y)

11 "How do your voluminous sacrifices benefit me?" the LORD is asking. "I've had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts. I don't enjoy the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats.

12 When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts?

12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

12 “When you come (AB)to appear before Me,Who requires (e)of you this trampling of My courts?

12 When you come to appear before Me,who requires this from you—this trampling of My courts?

12 "When you come to present yourselves in my presence, who has required you to trample on my courts?

13 Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me; new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations: I can't bear with evil assemblies.

13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.

13 “Bring your worthless offerings no longer,(AC)Incense is an abomination to Me.(AD)New moon and sabbath, the (AE)calling of assemblies—I cannot (AF)endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.

13 Stop bringing useless offerings.(Z)Your incense is detestable to Me.New Moons and Sabbaths,(AA)and the calling of solemn assemblies(AB)I cannot stand iniquity(AC) with a festival.

13 Stop bringing useless offerings! Incense is detestable to me, as are your New Moons, Sabbaths, and calling of convocations. I cannot stand iniquity within a solemn assembly.

14 My soul hates your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They are a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them.

14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

14 “I hate your new moon festivals and your (AG)appointed feasts,They have become a burden to Me;I am (AH)weary of bearing them.

14 I hate your New Moons and prescribed festivals.They have become a burden to Me;I am tired of putting up with them.

14 As for your New Moons and your appointed festivals, I abhor them. They've become a burden to me; I've grown weary of carrying that burden.

15 When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

15 “So when you (AI)spread out your hands in prayer,(AJ)I will hide My eyes from you;Yes, even though you (AK)multiply prayers,I will not listen.(AL)Your hands are (f)covered with blood.

15 When you lift up your hands in prayer,(AD)I will refuse to look at you;even if you offer countless prayers,I will not listen.(AE)Your hands are covered with blood.(AF)

15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I'll hide my eyes from you. Even though you pray repeatedly, I won't listen. Your hands are full of blood, your fingers drenched with iniquity."

Purification Of Jerusalem

16 Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil.

17 Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Judge the fatherless. Plead for the widow."

17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

18 "Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD: "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

18 “Come, let us discuss this,”(AJ)says the Lord.“Though your sins are like scarlet,they will be as white as snow;(AK)though they are as red as crimson,they will be like wool.

18 "Please come, and let's reason together," implores the LORD. "Even though your sins are like scarlet, they'll be white like snow. Though they're like crimson, they'll become like wool.

19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;

19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

19 (AU)If you consent and obey,You will (AV)eat the best of the land;

19 If you are willing and obedient,you will eat the good things of the land.(AL)

19 If you're willing and obedient, you'll eat the best that the land produces;

20 but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it."

20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

20 “But if you refuse and rebel,You will be (AW)devoured by the sword.”Truly, (AX)the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Purifying Jerusalem

21 How the faithful city has become a prostitute. She was full of justice; righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.

21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.

21 The faithful city—what an adulteress(f) she has become!She was once full of justice.Righteousness once dwelt in her—but now, murderers!

21 "How the faithful city has become a whore, she who used to be filled with justice! Righteousness used to reside within her, but now only murderers live there.

22 Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water.

22 Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:

22 Your silver has become dross,Your drink diluted with water.

22 Your silver has become dross,(g)your beer(h) is diluted with water.

22 Your silver has become dross, your best wine is diluted with water.

23 Your rulers are rebellious, and companions of thieves. Everyone loves bribes, and follows after rewards. They do not judge the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come to them.

23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.

23 Your (AZ)rulers are rebelsAnd companions of thieves;Everyone (BA)loves a bribeAnd chases after rewards.They (BB)do not (h)defend the (i)orphan,Nor does the widow’s plea come before them.

23 Your rulers are rebels,friends of thieves.(AO)They all love graftand chase after bribes.(AP)They do not defend the rights of the fatherless,and the widow’s case never comes before them.(AQ)

23 Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. All of them are lovers of bribes and are runners after gifts. They don't bring justice to orphans, and the widow's case never comes up for review in their court."

24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, says: "Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries, and avenge myself of my enemies;

24 Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:

24 Therefore the Lord (j)God of hosts,The (BC)Mighty One of Israel, declares,“Ah, I will be relieved of My adversariesAnd (BD)avenge Myself on My foes.

24 Therefore the Lord God of Hosts,the Mighty One of Israel, declares:“Ah, I will gain satisfaction from My foes;I will take revenge against My enemies.(AR)

24 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies, the one who is Israel's Mighty One, declares: "Now I'll get relief from his enemies and avenge myself on his foes.

25 and I will turn my hand on you, thoroughly purge away your dross, and will take away all your tin.

25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:

25 “I will also turn My hand against you,And will (BE)smelt away your dross as with lyeAnd will remove all your alloy.

25 I will turn My hand against you(AS)and will burn away your dross(i) completely;(j)I will remove all your impurities.(AT)

25 When I turn my attention to you, I'll refine your dross as in a furnace. I'll remove all your alloy.

26 I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called 'The city of righteousness, a faithful town.'

26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellers as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.

26 “Then I will restore your (BF)judges as at the first,And your counselors as at the beginning;After that you will be called the (BG)city of righteousness,A faithful city.”

26 I will restore your judges(AU) to what they once were,(k)and your advisers to their former state.(l)Afterward you will be called the Righteous City,(AV)a Faithful City.”

26 Let me restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you'll be called "The Righteous City' and "The Faithful City of Zion'.

27 Zion shall be redeemed with justice, and her converts with righteousness.

27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

27 Zion will be (BH)redeemed with justiceAnd her (k)repentant ones with righteousness.

27 "Zion will be redeemed by justice, and her repentant ones by righteousness.

28 But the destruction of transgressors and sinners shall be together, and those who forsake the LORD shall be consumed.

28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.

28 But (l)transgressors and sinners will be (BI)crushed together,And those who forsake the Lord will come to an end.

28 But both rebels and sinners will be destroyed,and those who abandon the Lord will perish.

28 Rebels and sinners will be broken together, and those who forsake the LORD will be consumed.

29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, and you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen.

29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.

29 Surely (m)you will be ashamed of the (n)(BJ)oaks which you have desired,And you will be embarrassed at the (BK)gardens which you have chosen.

29 Indeed, they(m) will be ashamed of the sacred treesyou desired,(AX)and you will be embarrassed because of the gardensyou have chosen.(AY)

29 They'll be ashamed of the oak trees that you desired; and you'll blush because of the gardens that you have chosen.

30 For you shall be as an oak whose leaf fades, and as a garden that has no water.

30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.

30 For you will be like an (o)oak whose (BL)leaf fades awayOr as a garden that has no water.

30 For you will become like an oakwhose leaves are withered,and like a garden without water.(AZ)

30 You'll be like an oak whose leaf is withering, like an unwatered garden.

31 The strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark. They will both burn together, and no one will quench them."

31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.

31 The strong man will become tinder,His work also a spark.Thus they shall both (BM)burn togetherAnd there will be (BN)none to quench them.

31 The strong one will become tinder,and his work a spark;both will burn together,(BA)with no one to quench the flames.(BB)

31 Your strong one will be like tinder, and your work a spark; both of them will burn together, with no one to quench the flames that burn them."
