The Egyptians Are No Help

1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

1 Woe to those who go down to (A)Egypt for helpAnd (B)rely on horses,And trust in chariots because they are manyAnd in horsemen because they are very strong,But they do not (C)look to the (D)Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!

1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help(A)and who depend on horses! They trust in the abundance of chariotsand in the large number of horsemen.(B)They do not look(C) to the Holy One of Israeland they do not seek the Lord’s help.

1 "How terrible it will be for those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the chariot, because there are so many, and in charioteers, because they are so strong but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek the LORD!

1 Woe (judgment is coming) to those who go down to Egypt for help,Who rely on horsesAnd trust in chariots because they are many,And in horsemen because they are very strong,But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek and consult the Lord!

2 Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.

2 Yet He also is (E)wise and will (F)bring disasterAnd does (G)not retract His words,But will arise against the house of (H)evildoersAnd against the help of the (I)workers of iniquity.

2 But He also is wise and brings disaster.(D)He does not go back on what He says;(E)He will rise up against the house of wicked menand against the allies of evildoers.

2 Yet he is also wise and can bring disaster; he does not take back his words, but will rise up against the house of those who practice evil and against anyone who assists people who work iniquity.

2 Yet He is also wise and will bring disaster,And does not retract His words,But will arise against the house of evildoersAnd against the helpers of those who do evil.

3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.

3 Now the Egyptians are (J)men and not God,And their (K)horses are flesh and not spirit; So the Lord will (L)stretch out His hand,And (M)he who helps will stumbleAnd he who is helped will fall,And all of them will come to an end together.

3 Egyptians are men, not God;their horses are flesh, not spirit. When the Lord raises His hand to strike, the helper will stumbleand the one who is helped will fall;both will perish together.

3 The Egyptians are men, not God, and their horses are physical, not spirit. When the LORD stretches out his hand, anyone who assists will stumble, and the one who is helped will fall; and they will all perish together."

3 Now the Egyptians are men and not God,And their horses are flesh and not spirit; And the Lord will stretch out His hand,And he (Egypt) who helps will stumble,And he (Judah) who is helped will fall,And all of them will perish together.

4 For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.

4 For thus says the Lord to me,“As the (N)lion or the young lion growls over his prey,Against which a band of shepherds is called out,And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise,So will the Lord of hosts come down to wage (O)war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”

4 For this is what the Lord said to me:As a lion or young lion growls over its prey(F)when a band of shepherds is called out against it,and is not terrified by their shoutingor subdued by their noise,so the Lord of Hosts will come downto fight on Mount Zionand on its hill.(G)

4 For this is what the LORD told me: "Just as a lion or a young lion growls over his objects of prey, even when a whole band of shepherds is called out against it, it is not alarmed at their shouting or disturbed by their clamor so the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will come down to do battle on Mount Zion and on its hill.

4 For so the Lord says to me,“As the lion or the young lion growls over his prey,And though a large group of shepherds is called out against himHe will not be terrified at their voice nor cringe at their noise,So the Lord of hosts will come down to wage war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”

5 As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.

5 Like (a)flying (P)birds so the Lord of hosts will protect Jerusalem. He will (Q)protect and deliver it;He will pass over and rescue it.

5 Like hovering birds,so the Lord of Hosts will protect Jerusalem(H)by protecting it, He will rescue it,by sparing it, He will deliver it.

5 Like birds hovering overhead, so the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will protect Jerusalem; he will shield and deliver it; and he will pass over and bring it to safety.

5 Like flying birds, so will the Lord of hosts protect Jerusalem; He will protect and save it,He will pass over and rescue it.

6 Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted.

6 (R)Return to Him from whom (b)you have (S)deeply defected, O sons of Israel.

6 Return to the One the Israelites have greatly rebelled against.(I)

6 Turn back to him, yes to him whom your people have so greatly betrayed, you people of Israel.

6 Return to Him from whom you have so deeply defected, O sons of Israel.

7 For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin.

7 For in that day every man will (T)cast away his silver idols and his gold idols, which your (U)sinful hands have made for you as (V)a sin.

7 For on that day, every one of you will reject the silver and gold idols that your own hands have sinfully made.(J)

7 For at that time, everyone will throw away their idols of silver and their idols of gold that your hands have sinfully made for yourselves.

7 For in that day every man will reject and throw away his idols of silver and his idols of gold [in disgust], which your own hands have sinfully made for you.

8 Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited.

8 And the (W)Assyrian will fall by a sword not of man,And a (X)sword not of man will devour him.So he will (c)(Y)not escape the sword,And his young men will become (Z)forced laborers.

8 Then Assyria will fall, but not by human sword;a sword will devour him,but not one made by man.(K)He will flee from the sword;his young men will be put to forced labor.(L)

8 "Then Assyria will fall by a sword that is not from human beings only a sword not wielded by mortal beings will devour them. They will flee from the sword, and their young men will be put to forced labor.

8 Then the Assyrian will fall by a sword not of man,And a sword not of man will devour him.And he will flee from the sword [of God],And his young men will become forced labor.

9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

9 “His (AA)rock will pass away because of panic,And his princes will be terrified at the (AB)standard,”Declares the Lord, whose (AC)fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

9 His rock(a) will pass away because of fear,(M)and his officers will be afraid because of the signal flag.(N)This is the Lord’s declaration—whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.(O)

9 Their stronghold will vanish by reason of terror, and their commanders will be filled with alarm because of the battle standard," declares the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

9 “His rock [his stronghold] will pass away because of panic,And his princes will be terrified at the [sight of the battle] standard,”Declares the Lord, whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
