Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes!

Then Abraham asked, "Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord (although I am but dust and ashes),

I am not worthy of all the faithful love you have shown your servant. With only my walking stick I crossed the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.

David felt guilty after he had numbered the army. David said to the Lord, "I have sinned greatly by doing this! Now, O Lord, please remove the guilt of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly."

while he went a day's journey into the desert. He went and sat down under a shrub and asked the Lord to take his life: "I've had enough! Now, O Lord, take my life. After all, I'm no better than my ancestors."

I prayed, "O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God! For our iniquities have climbed higher than our heads, and our guilt extends to the heavens.

You are righteous with regard to all that has happened to us, for you have acted faithfully. It is we who have been in the wrong!

Against you -- you above all -- I have sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. So you are just when you confront me; you are right when you condemn me.

I said, "Too bad for me! I am destroyed, for my lips are contaminated by sin, and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. My eyes have seen the king, the Lord who commands armies."

All of us had wandered off like sheep; each of us had strayed off on his own path, but the Lord caused the sin of all of us to attack him.

We are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in your sight. We all wither like a leaf; our sins carry us away like the wind.

we have sinned! We have done what is wrong and wicked; we have rebelled by turning away from your commandments and standards.

But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!"

I will get up and go to my father and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

The tax collector, however, stood far off and would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, be merciful to me, sinner that I am!'

This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" -- and I am the worst of them!

then you plunge me into a slimy pit and my own clothes abhor me.

and he contends with God on behalf of man as a man pleads for his friend.

I would lay out my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments.

I would give him an accounting of my steps; like a prince I would approach him.

Look at me and be appalled; put your hands over your mouths.

the chief men refrained from talking and covered their mouths with their hands;

They said to him, "Shut up! Put your hand over your mouth and come with us! You can be our adviser and priest. Wouldn't it be better to be a priest for a whole Israelite tribe than for just one man's family?"

I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done.

If you have done foolishly by exalting yourself or if you have planned evil, put your hand over your mouth!

Nations will see this and be disappointed by all their strength, they will put their hands over their mouths, and act as if they were deaf.

But the Lord is in his majestic palace. The whole earth is speechless in his presence!"

Be silent in the Lord's presence, all people everywhere, for he is being moved to action in his holy dwelling place.

Then Abraham said, "May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak! What if thirty are found there?" He replied, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."

But if the bright spot stays in its place and has not spread, it is the scar of the boil, so the priest is to pronounce him clean.

But if only God would speak, if only he would open his lips against you,

What you know, I know also; I am not inferior to you!

"Has anyone said to God, 'I have endured chastisement, but I will not act wrongly any more.
