When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

They were very afraid because Gibeon was a great royal city. It was larger than Ai and all the men there were great fighters.

The children of Israel journeyed to their cities on the third day. Their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

2 Samuel 21:1-2

There was a famine for three successive years during David's reign. David asked Jehovah for advice about it. Jehovah answered: It is because of Saul and his family. They are guilty of murder because they killed the people of Gibeon.

Now Jericho was tightly shut up because the people were afraid of the children of Israel. No one went out, and no one came in.

Jehovah said to Joshua: Do not fear and do not be discouraged (troubled) (confused). Take all the people of war with you and go up to Ai. I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.
