Deuteronomy 7:8

Deuteronomy 7:12

If you listen to these rules and faithfully obey them, Jehovah your God will keep his covenant with you and be merciful to you, as he swore to your fathers.

He made this covenant with Abraham and gave his oath to Isaac.

When God made a promise to Abraham, he could swear by no one greater then himself, so he swore by himself.

Men swear by someone greater then themselves: and an oath for confirmation to them puts an end to the problem.
