"I tell you, of all men born of women there is not one greater than John; and yet the one who is of least importance in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

Although he wanted to have him killed, he was afraid of the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.

But if we say, 'From men,' we are afraid of the people, for they all consider John a prophet."

On the other hand, can we say, 'It was from men'?" For they were afraid of the people, because everybody thought that John was really a prophet.

This is the man of whom the Scripture says, "'Attention! I am sending my messenger on before you; He will prepare the road ahead of you.'

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah: "Here I send my messenger ahead of you; He will prepare your way.

He said, "I am a voice of one shouting in the desert, 'Make the road straight for the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said."

You can bear testimony to me yourselves that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent as His announcer.'
