Then Jerusalem and all Judea, even the whole Jordan district, continued to go out to him

John the Baptizer appeared in the desert and was preaching a baptism conditioned on repentance to obtain the forgiveness of sins.

This took place at Bethany on the farther side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

And they went to John and said to him, "Teacher, the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, to whom you bore testimony yourself, is baptizing people and everybody is going to Him."

Then Paul said, "John baptized with a baptism that was an expression of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was to come after him; that is, in Jesus."

And now, why are you waiting? Get up and be baptized and wash your sins away by calling on His name.'
