1 The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.

1 The (a)(A)oracle of the word of the Lord to (B)Israel through (b)Malachi.

1 An oracle:(A) The word of the Lord(B) to Israel through(C) Malachi.(a)

1 A declaration: a message from the LORD to Israel by Malachi.

An Oracle Against Edom

2 "I have loved you," says Yahweh, but you say, "How have you loved us?" "[Is] Esau not Jacob's brother?" {declares} Yahweh. "I have loved Jacob,

2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,

2 “I have (C)loved you,” says the Lord. But you say, “How have You loved us?” “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I (D)have loved Jacob;

2 “I have loved you,”(D) says the Lord. But you ask: “How have You loved us?”“Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?”(E) This is the Lord’s declaration. “Even so, I loved Jacob,

2 "I've loved you," says the LORD. "But you ask, "How have you loved us?'

3 but Esau I have hated. I have made his mountain ranges a desolation, and [given] his inheritance to the jackals of [the] desert."

3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

3 but I have hated Esau, and I have (E)made his mountains a desolation and appointed his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness.”

3 but I hated Esau.(F) I turned his mountains into a wasteland, and gave his inheritance to the desert jackals.”(G)

3 "Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD, "yet I loved Jacob, hated Esau, turned his mountains into a wasteland, and gave his inheritance to desert jackals.

4 If Edom says, "We are shattered, but we will return and rebuild [the] ruins," Yahweh of hosts says this: "They may build, but I will tear down; and they will be called a territory of wickedness, and the people [with] whom Yahweh is angry forever."

4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.

4 Though Edom says, “We have been (F)beaten down, but we will (c)(G)return and build up the ruins”; thus says the Lord of hosts, “They may (H)build, but I will tear down; and men will call them the (d)wicked territory, and the people (e)toward whom the Lord is indignant (I)forever.”

4 Though Edom says: “We have been devastated, but we will rebuild(b) the ruins,” the Lord of Hosts says this: “They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called a wicked country(H) and the people the Lord has cursed(c) forever.(I)

4 Even though Edom may claim, "We were crushed, but we will return and rebuild the ruins,' this is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "They may rebuild, but I'll demolish. People will call them, "The Wicked Land,' and, "The People With Whom the LORD is Forever Angry.'

5 Your eyes will see [this], and you will say, "Yahweh is great beyond the borders of Israel."

5 And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel.

5 Your eyes will see this and you will say, “(J)The Lord (f)be magnified beyond the (g)border of Israel!”

5 Your own eyes will see this, and you yourselves will say, ‘The Lord is great, even beyond(d) the borders of Israel.’(J)

5 Your own eyes will see this, and you will say, "Great is the LORD even beyond the borders of Israel!'"

An Oracle Against The Temple Priesthood

6 "A son honors [his] father, and a slave his master; but if I [am] a father, where [is] my honor, and if I [am] a master, where [is] my reverence?" says Yahweh of hosts to you, O priests, {who despise} my name. "But you say, 'How have we despised your name?'

6 A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?

6 “‘A son (K)honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a (L)father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My (h)respect?’ says the Lord of hosts to you, O (M)priests who despise My name. But you say, ‘How have we despised Your name?’

6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of Me?(K) says Yahweh of Hosts to you priests, who despise My name.”Yet you ask: “How have we despised Your name?”

6 "A son honors his father and a servant his master. So if I'm a father, where is my honor? And if I'm a master, where is my respect?" says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies to you priests who are despising my name. "But you ask, "How have we despised your name?'

7 [You are] presenting defiled food on my altar! But you ask, 'How have we defiled you?' By saying [that] the table of Yahweh is despised!

7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible.

7 You are presenting (N)defiled (i)(O)food upon My altar. But you say, ‘How have we defiled You?’ In that you say, ‘The (P)table of the Lord is to be despised.’

7 “By presenting defiled food on My altar.”You ask: “How have we defiled You?”(L)When you say: “The Lord’s table is contemptible.”(M)

7 By presenting defiled food on my altar. And you ask, "How have we defiled you?' By saying, "The Table of the LORD is contemptible.'

8 When you offer a blind [animal] for sacrifice, is that not wrong? And when you offer [the] lame and the one who is ill, is that not wrong? Present it, please, to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? {Will he show you favor}?" says Yahweh of hosts.

8 And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.

8 But when you present the (Q)blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? And when you present the lame and sick, is it not evil? (j)Why not offer it to your (R)governor? Would he be pleased with you? Or would he receive you kindly?” says the Lord of hosts.

8 “When you present a blind animal for sacrifice, is it not wrong? And when you present a lame or sick animal, is it not wrong?(N) Bring it to your governor! Would he be pleased with you or show you favor?” asks the Lord of Hosts.

8 When you bring blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? And when you sacrifice crippled or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Offer that to your governor would he be pleased with you or receive you favorably?" asks the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.

9 So then, {implore the favor of God} so that he will be gracious to us. "{This is what you have done}. {Will he show favor to any of you}?" says Yahweh of hosts.

9 And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts.

9 “But now (k)will you not (S)entreat God’s favor, that He may be gracious to us? (l)With such an offering on your part, will He (T)receive any of you kindly?” says the Lord of hosts.

9 “And now ask for God’s favor. Will He be gracious to us?(O) Since this has come from your hands, will He show any of you favor?”(P) asks the Lord of Hosts.

9 "And now, go ahead and implore God by saying, "Be gracious to us.' Will he receive you favorably and accept offerings like that from your hand?" asks the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.

10 "Who also among you will shut [the temple] doors [so that] you will not kindle fire in vain [on] my altar? I take no pleasure in you," says Yahweh of hosts, "and {I will not accept} an offering from your hand.

10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.

10 “Oh that there were one among you who would (U)shut the (m)gates, that you might not uselessly kindle fire on My altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord of hosts, “(V)nor will I accept an offering from (n)you.

10 “I wish one of you would shut the temple doors,(Q) so you would no longer kindle a useless fire on My altar!(R) I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord of Hosts, “and I will accept(S) no offering from your hands.(T)

10 "Oh, that one of you would shut the Temple doors and not light useless fires on the altar! I'm not pleased with you," says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "and I'll accept no offerings from you.

11 From the rising of the sun to its setting, my name [is] great among the nations, and in every place incense [is] being presented to my name, and a pure offering. For my name [is] great among the nations," says Yahweh of hosts.

11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.

11 For from the (W)rising of the sun even to its setting, (X)My name will be (Y)great among the nations, and in every place (Z)incense is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name will be (AA)great among the nations,” says the Lord of hosts.

11 “For My name will be great among the nations,(U) from the rising of the sun to its setting. Incense(e) and pure offerings will be presented in My name in every place because My name will be great among the nations,”(f) says Yahweh of Hosts.

11 Even so, from where the sun rises to where it sets my name will be great among the Gentiles. Incense will be brought to me everywhere, along with pure offerings, because my name will be great among the Gentiles," says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.

12 "But you [are] profaning it by saying the table of the Lord [is] defiled, and its fruit--its food--is despised!

12 But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.

12 “But you are (AB)profaning it, in that you say, ‘The table of the Lord is defiled, and as for its fruit, its food is to be despised.’

12 But you are profaning it(V) when you say: “The Lord’s table is defiled, and its product, its food, is contemptible.”

12 "But you are profaning my name by saying that the Table of the LORD is defiled and that its fruit and its food are contemptible.

13 And you say, 'Look! [This is] a weariness,' and you sniff [with disdain] at it," says Yahweh of hosts. "And you bring [the] stolen, the lame, and the one that is sick--[this] you bring as the offering! Should I {accept it} from your hand?" says Yahweh.

13 Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.

13 You also say, ‘(o)My, how (AC)tiresome it is!’ And you disdainfully sniff at it,” says the Lord of hosts, “and you bring what was taken by (AD)robbery and what is (AE)lame or sick; so you bring the offering! Should I (AF)receive that from your hand?” says the Lord.

13 You also say: “Look, what a nuisance!” “And you scorn(g) it,”(h)(W) says the Lord of Hosts. “You bring stolen,(i)(X) lame, or sick animals. You bring this as an offering! Am I to accept that from your hands?” asks the Lord.

13 "And you say, "What a burden!' and sniff contemptuously at it," says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "when you present maimed, crippled, and diseased animals, and when you bring the offering. Should I accept this from your hand?" asks the LORD.

14 "Cursed is the one who cheats, who has in his flock a male and vows [it], but [instead] sacrifices a blemished one to the Lord! For I [am] a great king," says Yahweh of hosts, "and my name [is] awesome among the nations."

14 But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.

14 “But cursed be the (AG)swindler who has a male in his flock and vows it, but sacrifices a (AH)blemished animal to the Lord, for I am a great (AI)King,” says the Lord of hosts, “and My name is (p)(AJ)feared among the (q)nations.”

14 “The deceiver is cursed who has an acceptable male in his flock and makes a vow but sacrifices a defective animal to the Lord.(Y) For I am a great King,” says Yahweh of Hosts, “and My name(j) will be feared among the nations.

14 "Cursed is the deceiver who has an acceptable male in his flock, and vows to give it, but sacrifices a mutilated one to the LORD. Indeed, I am a great king," says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "and my name is feared among the Gentiles."
