John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

In those days John the Baptist came, and preached in the wilderness of Jewry,

When Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests: The word of God came unto John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

and John also baptised in Enon, besides Salim, because there was much water there, and they came, and were baptised.

which preaching was published throughout all Jewry, and began in Galilee, after the baptism preached by John;

when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to Israel.

And he said unto them, "Wherewith were ye then baptised?" And they said, "With John's baptism."

And now: why tarriest thou? Arise and be baptised, and wash away thy sins, in calling on the name of the Lord.'
