Some began to spit at Him, and

to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in the face.

They *dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;

But I am a worm and not a man,
A reproach of men and despised by the people.

He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman

cohort around Him.

Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him,

And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.

And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him;

But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;

and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
